Default Clutch Install.... too much labor $$?

I was just quoted at $450 labor to install clutch, and they can get the clutch package at dealer cost for me of $296.60 (Throwout bearing, Pressure Plate, and Clutch Pack, machining flywheel).... does this seem steep? The clutch would be direct from Nissan stock replacement.... Do you guys know anyone good for a better price around here?

I did my own install in 3 hours including new pressure plate and clutch... Most shops are right around $90 an hour give or take a few dollars..

Default machining

They said that you can machine the flywheel if the clutch is just slipping right now (depending on how bad it's slipping).... but if the clutch completely goes out then you would most likely have to replace the flywheel because of the metal-metal contact.... I haven't got the slightest clue though.... the stock replacement was because the shop said they wouldn't install an aftermarket clutch (it's the dealer I bought the car from)... only nissan direct replacement..

Brooke, you said you replaced your own, have you ever undertaken a clutch install before? I never have so am worried about messing it up....

I'd call a few Performance shops. (i.e. MSP in Fredrick is fairly close to you, Fredrick Nissan as well) see what they can do for you on an upgraded clutch and possibly a flywheel. It'll be a little more, but it's worth it IMO if you drive your car "enthusiastically" like some of us do.

But the price they quoted you is pretty good. I'd go with that if I was keeping the car stock.

OMG do you really think a clutch install is that hard to do?? The first clutch install I did was on jackstands in my garage and the second time with a lift... There is no shame to get your hands a little dirty from time to time, plus I know the install was done right....

Man... It's too bad you're up in MD.... I know Ross up at Precision Auto was only charging like 3 something for a clutch install. You could always give him a call anyways just to verify the price if anything else
He's in Chesapeake, Va

Sounds very reasonable, especially if it's a Nissan dealer....

We are not a dealer but we do pride our selfs in doing dealer quality work. For a clutch install we charge $375 for labor. There are several people on this board that have had work done by us that can vouch for our quality. Beings you are going through the trouble of having a clutch installed I would recomend having a nice performance clutch and flywheel put in while you are there so you do not have to have it done again any time soon. Personal opinion is that the stock clutch sucks.

Default Aam

Got quoted from AAM $395 for the install if I buy the parts from them... said they can do the JWT clutch for $429... this is seeming like my best bet so far....

I'm curently in the clutch/flywheel market myself because of a tranny replacement and I'm overwhelmed with info and opinions, let alone the pressure to get a new setup before "deals" dissapear and my warranty is up.

My question to you, did anyone mention that you may have a problem with the JWT clutch and stock flywheel meshing properly? Can the stock flywheel be beaten on with a clutch such as the JWT or equivalent? I may be taking a gamble on getting a beefy clutch only then having the dealership tell me on the spot that I have to take it in the azz and replace my flywheel with what they've got!! Because it's fried and used...

Or should I prepare and buy a package (clutch/flywheel) at a good price before I go in there with the possibility of selling the flywheel at another time?

Ahhh, the unknown... the story of my life, lol!
