Default buying a car in MD to be titled/tagged in VA

How does temp tags work in VA? people keep saying to put any hard tags on the car with a bill of sale and you're good to go, that sounds fishy to me.

I'm not a fan of driving around with the wrong tags on the car, not to say I haven't done it before on a car deal, but its not something I would like to do when driving from MD to VA.

Whats the best way to get a MD car into VA and inspected/tagged?
car will most likely be bought from a private party so no dealer temp tags.

Make the transaction in the parking lot of a nearby DMV?

You can go to the va dmv and get temp tags, but you gotta have copies of everything under the sun for your new car. Title, insurance info, owners info, etc. Its a big song and dance, just toss a va tag on the back and drive it home, if you get pulled claim ignorence, hopefully you'll get the benefit of the doubt.

Or you can do what I did with my Z. Keep the owners tags and mail them back to him when you get yours straightened out.

Well I just got a truck in Delaware and put some other tags on it. What I have done before also is got a one day permit and drove the car from Va to Ohio but you have to have the car already. What I would check is if Md can issues you a 30 day tag. Just call their DMV or what ever they call it and ask.

Maryland does 15 day temp tags, or at least use to, word on the street is they now give you hard tags with a 15 or 30 day sticker.

If thats the case, Im guessing they charge you a good bit for the hard tags.

Get a temp from MD b/c thats where you bought it. Then take a day and go thru the horse and pony show at the VA DMV. If its a dealer they can actually get you VA tags in MD and do all of it for you from what I remember. Herb Gordon did it for me when I lived in FL and bought my cars up here.
