Default Drag Question?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I've been told that the level of tread wear doesn't matter when drag racing. Im running 275 BFG KDW's and the tread is suffering to say the least. I am going to be participating in the upcomming drag meet on the 11th and my buddy and I have a score to settle. He drives and 99 M coupe and we're prety even on the breather mods. I have a new set ready to go but would like to fully toast these before replacement. If new tires make a difference then I'm all about it. My car could use free washes, courtesy of my budy, for a month. There for I must beat him!

After 3 sets of tires and 4 years of drag racing, I don’t think that it matters. I would not drive from the tire store to the dragstrip, but besides that, you should be OK.

The level of tread left usually doesn't matter. Many feel that bald tires hook better its personal preferance, at your power levels its not a huge difference. Regardless of bald or not running on 19's for a grudge race is silly. I'd find some dr's and take care of that race.

a better way to win the grudge match would be to sagatoge the other guys car. shove a dead bird in his air intake tube.

I actually put on brand new KDW's on right before the track meet last year and I wished I hadnt. My bald dunlop 9000's were so much more stickier and to burn some rubber on new tires kinda hurt knowing how much I paid for them.

It wouldnt be fair to my buddy if I ran slicks, we are trying to keep it as even as possible, plus if I beat him with slicks on and he was running street tires he would never shut up about it so I want to beat him fair and square. Do you think I would be better off running my 17 inch stockers with stock potenzas?

Why not put the KDW's on now and have them nice and broken in by the track day? Somewhat bald tires hook, bald almost with cords showing is no good and not safe....

Order Id choose. I assumed the KDW's go on the 19's and not the 17's. Your losing a few tenths in the 19's alone, traction or not.

17" on stock tires

19" KDW worn in

Bald 19" KDW

I agree with the stockers call.

What wheels/tires will your friend be running?

I think im going to use my stockers then. Does it matter if they have a little bit of dry rotting? Also would leaving my 19's in the front affect me negatively. Thanks for your feedback Alberto I hope to see your car in action at the strip.

I did a test of stock 18's (Track wheels) vs 19's up front with slicks out back for both runs at the dragstrip on the ST set-up. That didnt affect my times/traps at all. Before and after swap were in 11.9-12.1 range. I wouldnt worry about it as much as the rear.

Little dry rott isnt bad, just use good judgment on that-if the tires are 3+ years old you may wanna reconsider.. 27psi on stockers, slightly hot will pull 1.9's easy.

PS-I wont be racing my car or likely have it by the track day.

Could I run my front 225 17 stockers in the rear, would that help/hurt?
