With winter coming soon, I thought I'd make a thread about winter preparation. This winter I will be w/out a beater (selling it) and I'm thinking of using the Z w/some snow tires. I didn't drive the Z last winter for a total of 3 days....but I have a feeling this winter will be like 2003.

Anywho - please post what you do for winter preparation/winter.

What tires do y'all recommend? Current set ups (winter)? How'd she handle?

 

What part of MD do you live?

I'm central, Baltimore, and I just run my stock potenza's and they are good.
Only rode once in snow/sleet/ice and the potenza's did fine.

Plus, the Baltimore area barely sees snow.

 

I run the blizzacks on my stock wheels in the winter and have had no problem for 5 years.

 

a quick look on tire rack shows winter tires are 170+ each and I still have to find wheels for it. So my winter preperation will include a heavy duty car cover and a $600 Celica or Nissan Stanza. Another quick look on crackslist shows a cheap Pathfinder but that might get expensive when it comes to repairs. The way I see it if my $600 car last me thru the winter that woudl be more than enough worth the money.

Another option would be just park the Z and bum rides from my girlfriend's I35 when weather gets chitty. haha

 

For the people driving beaters or their 4WDs (like me) when you garage for the winter do you put the car on jack stands to let the suspension hang, or just park it? Also, do you do a cooling system flush now or in the spring?

if and when it snows it wont last more than a week in this area man... even its its 20 degrees out, if no snow, you can drive your car.

i wouldnt waist time or money doing much winter prep. If you can bumb a ride for a week from you girl, you issue is solved. If you want to buy you Z at risk..dont go cheap and just buy the Blizzacks. My wife has a full set with the ugly black rims for 800 from tire rack...(rims and tires) black steal rims.... they are sick on the snow and ice...we drive to St. Louis every winter.

I would not stress it... i will be on OEM 19s running bridstones and sideways all the way down the road.

but I grew up driving in tons of snow... drifting before the called it drifting....

lower your insurance deductible for the winter..chances are higher to be in an accident..the 10 bucks a month will be cheaper than a 500 or 1000 deductible..then change it back in the summer.

^ 4SHIZZIL that couldn't have been said better. After driving in major snow storms in Kansas City, MO with a lowered Chevy C10 that would slide out in a heartbeat the winters here aren't that bad. Plus the winter is the best time to learn how to drive in those situations anyway so if you are ever in them you would know what to do.

My car will sit in the garage on all 4 tires. screw putting it up on jack stands, Maryland has too many great 50+ and sunny days in the winter.

Goodyear Eagle F1 All Season

Good for about 2 inches of snow. Not great but they get me to and from work at a conservative speed.

 

Got some new rubber this summer. GY Eagle F1 AS (All season) ultra performance. I'll tell you how she handles in the winter once old man winter comes

Im driving the 98 accord with blizzaks and 208000 miles on it. I love when it snows in Bmore. All the potholes get filled with snow and ice...its the smoothest the roads are all year.

Im from CT and ive driven in all types of snow. It made me realize one thing... No one can have total control of their car in the snow. And you especially cannot control the jackass that thinks he is invincible in is 4 wheel drive. They still have the same brakes and tires as everyone else and cant stop any quicker.

Just my opinion. Put a shovel in the trunk in case you hit a snow bank

 

Best winter prep in the Mid-A: Park your chit and buy a reliable beater!
I grew up in Buffalo so I know a thing or two about snow/ice driving. The real problem around MD/DC/VA is other people don't know/can't manuever in this weather and chances are they'll end up hitting you or worse. I've only driven my Z through one bad day of snow/black ice and will likely never do it again. Even on some brand new Kumho all seasons I was still slipping, and I won't even bother commenting on all the tailgaters we have.

My advice, park your Z and save up for mods like someone else mentioned!

 

I got pilot sport allseasons and I drove in the snow last year while boosted. honestly not bad except for tools on the road tailing me and balling down the road. I would buy a beater but living in bmore the cost to garage it over the winter will be more than the car. only time I wouldn't or couldn't drive was when we got blasted with sleet after a few inches of snow. the plows created a wall behind the car that turned to a block of ice. it took a week with backhoes to dig all the cars out of the community.

if I had a job or kids I would get a beater.

Those would be wheels.
Preferably ones that match the tire's diameter.
