There are plenty that have lost their jobs, but I notice those that did are folks that companies deemed were replaceable. I know a few work horses that pumped out multi-million dollar projects, got paid 6 figures, did a perfect job and at the end of the day... got laid off! Why is that? sucks eh

Job Security - My theory is: regardless of what market you're in, you can create your own security. (unless of course - your company is shutting its doors then you're just SOL!)

However, at the end of the day, it's all about the psychology behind the decision of laying off vs not laying off. If you put yourself in the shoes of the hiring power and ask yourself, "If I had to lay someone off, who would it be? Well according to the books, it'll be the highest salary employees which I can replace or those employees that I don't really need..."

However, people neglect to realize that they have control over almost every aspect of their job security. After being in this industry for awhile, learn how your employer's brain functions. Most people in high power that calls the shots wants to know they're doing a good job. So how could you turn the tide and not be on the end that gets booted off? It's pretty simple - make your boss feel good about him or herself. It will separate you from the rest of the replaceable work horses. You're offering him/her something that they cannot get from reading 100's of resumes or talking to thousands of clients per day... why in the world would they ever want to fire you?!?!

In a big corporation, to them you're nothing but a statistic. But if you can make yourself known and rise above the numbers: the chances of you keeping your job will be higher than the rest.

I respect your thoughts, but completely disagree. Large companies will always do what is in the company's (or shareholders) best interest, which sometimes means whatever helps upper management keep their jobs and compensation packages. Average employees = replaceable ... Superior employees = expensive. Its a no win situation IMO.

I worked for a large insurance company straight out of college. I got a job because the company decided that all claims adjusters needed to posses a college degree, myself and others replaced people that had been working there for years and were much better and more efficient at their jobs then we were as noobs. People at all levels were shuffled around constantly and job security was non-existent.

After only 1 year I could see the cycle of fail that would always be there and decided to work for a very small company where I had 1 boss and could really be appreciated. Since then I have become self employed and don't think I could ever work for someone else ever again. If things go wrong, its all on me, but I'm going to be the first to know and the last to lose my job.
