Default Wheels: Paint vs Powder Coat

I was intending to get my wheels painted and then have them sealed with a clear powder coat, but my powder coater said it will change the color of the paint due to the heat.

I am looking for others experience that have painted or powder coated their wheels. I am aware that the powder coat will hold up better, but how bad is the paint over time? The dilemma is that the paint is an exact color match and the powder coat is close, but just a shade lighter in the sun.

Also, I am considering changing my hrome lips to a satin silver to match the bezels and door handles, since there is no other chrome on the car. I am concerned that this may be a tad too rice (if there is such a thing in the Mid-A ), so I am looking for thoughts on that as well.

I will try and getsome pics up for comparison on color in a bit.

ive painted mine 3 different times and it holds up pretty good until you have tires changed. the paint around the edge will usually get scuffed up or scraped off completely

Too RICE?!! NEVER!!! Blasphemy! There is no such thing as too rice, only MORE rice. Powdercoat will hold up longer if you plan on driving it everyday. Paint should match better, except it chips from time to time. Though, I wouldn't really worry about it if it's high quality paint.

Never thought of this before. Another issue to deal with on the paint

Mine didn't chip during wheel mounting so I must've done something right when I painted them.

I actually just looked this up not too long ago as I have a set that needs to be finished. I googled and most people have said that paint is better for wheels. Forget the reasons but if you google it, you will find many discussions about it.

If you are interested, I have a set of flat black volk gt-7's that I'm looking to sell soon.

Do you want your wheels painted or do you want your wheels electrostatic shocked while being applied with powder.

You tell me which sounds cooler to the ladies.

I met with my painter yesterday and picked up some of the interior stuff he did for me (sickness), he said the paint should hold up OK, but the chrome lips are an issue, he thinks the should be blasted clean and then painted so it will adhere properly. Thinking I may powder coat the lips and paint the centers. Durability and full color match may turn out to be the best of both worlds.

my painted 18's for the winter lasted longer than my powdercoated 20's for the summer (more chips in the powdercoat) plus, i snow-drift in the 18s....
it really depends where you get it done....

No question PC'ing when done correct can be more durable. With that said, over the years I have had 2 sets painted, and seen many done, as my good friend is the owner of YOWS. They do awesome prep/paint and they dont PC, and I have never seen anything flake, or look like crap even after years of use.

Do whatever works with your scheme, there are more options in colors, finishes, IMO with paining over PC'ing.
