So, I am just crossing the NC to VA border around Fancy Gap (a place notorious for cops getting people because the speed limit goes from 70mph to 65mph) and I've got the radar detector running full force (which is illegal in VA)
My thoughts, if I see a cop, I will just pull down my radar detector AND it's better to get pulled over for a radar detector than a speeding ticket (since the fine is $5 per 1mph over the speed limit).
Well, I get a hit on my radar detector, slow down to 65mph, finally see him, he pulls out and pulls me over. Long story short, the legal front window tint in VA is 50% and mine tested at 17% = ticket
AND
I had throw the radar detector on the floor and the first thing he asked was "Sir can you hand me your radar detector, I need to take down some information"
So, to all my 350Z friends, what do you think the purpose of writing down all my radar detector information is? He didn't confiscate the device, but he wrong down all the information.
Also, the way they test the windows is they slide the machine on both sides of the glass, which is easy for a window that rolls down, but how would they check the side windows or the read window? The machine definitely isn't going to fit because they don't roll down.

Oh no, I definitely live in VA, I live over in Blacksburg, near Virginia Tech University, and I know the windows are all illegal, but I like the look and I pay the fine.
However, my girlfriend lives in Charlotte, NC and I know the tint laws there too, which 35% is legal there, so I still would get a ticket.
I deserved both tickets for being stupid and I knew what I was doing was illegal, I am just curious why they needed the radar detector information but gave it back, even though I am a VA resident, where they are illegal.

I kind of wondered if it was to keep track of the radar detectors that they are able to detect in their cars. I mean, I always heard that VG2 guard is a "radar detector detector mode" but I wasn't sure because I didn't know that a radar detector sent out a signal.
What kind of a write up? I mean, I am not worried about getting in trouble, I am just trying to figure out why that information is important.

BTW, there's a guy in the forum that sells mirrors that work in conjunction with V1 detectors. So the unit is basically hardwired into your car and you can hit on/off with a button. No need to power off, rip it off the window and try and hide it.

Thanks. That is the most simple answer and makes the most sense. I kind of thought it might be if I get caught again. No reason to get caught again, lesson learned.
you think you got it bad man....just wait till I post my B.S. Reckless Driving ticket I got this past weekend. I was also cited for tint and no front tag but that was expected. I'm just waiting to hear back from my attorney as to whether I should post my citation publically for peoples opinions or not as I feel the signs are being misinterpreted by the officers.

I refuse to put 35% on the rears and 50% up front. I will just keep paying for tickets, well at least 2 more, then I will peel the front and get 35% up front
