Definitely stock cars are fine. I've even seen a Chrysler sebring out there.

Also, good advice on the brakes. My mechanic went with a Z and upgraded fluid and motors but stock pads that were new. On his 3rd trip out, he lost all his brakes and almost didn't get it stopped in the paddock. He is a TT 350z so he was pulling the car down from higher speeds. Personally, I go with motul rbf600 but I have AP brakes. I would go with some good pads and better fluid. If you can figure in a way to get cooling, go for it. I've also seen 350z guys go with the newer model stock Rotors and good carbotech pads with good fluid.

I used carbotechs and ATE super blue on 07 regular brakes, and that was more than sufficient. Towards the end of the day they got a little soft at the end of the front straight at SP, but on the next lap allowing more time for stopping allowed the brakes to cool some.

This is what can happen if you use stock pads:

I have also seen stock cars, Z06's, 911's... haha... but I have also seen late 80's camry's and fox bodies too.

Just be humble and willing to learn and you will go far.

I saw the car and driver nismo z story. Pretty sad for the nismo trim. I sent it to my mechanic before his track day. There have been relatively stock Zs at most id the events I've been to but all have upgraded brakes; at least pads and fluid so you are right I'm sure.

Instructors make a big difference and how much they will help you. Im fairly happy in my novice group. I get the same track time as anyone else and I don't worry so much about not being able to drive my car home. I've gotten faster but mostly concentrate on line and doing the exact same thing every lap. The last time on the small track at SP, I was fast enough to get motion sickness which is fast enough for me.

Well, seeing that I have tons of lap on Summit main and VIR (very few on Shenandoah.....DO NOT LIKE THAT TRACK), that should help me since I know the line....in a shifter kart. Can't be that much different in a car. I was running in the 1:25-1:30 range on Summit main when I decided 10 years of karts was enough and sold everything.

Well, the "humble and willing to learn" was more towards people that haven't gone before, regardless, don't be this guy

I'm running stock brembos, pads, rotors, and fluid. I take it that I should upgrade at least my pads before I hit the track?

I would at least upgrade your pads. Your stock rotors may get warped depending on how hard you are pushing it, but I ran on mine and they were fine. Just one weekend you should be fine. The only problem you would run into with the fluid is that you could boil it if you are running it hard, but on an HPDE1/2 you will probably be fine. Never a bad idea to upgrade though.
