Default Please help, buying a 370Z in N.J., live in De.

I found a 370Z in New Jersey from a dealer I would like to buy. I live in Delaware. What do I have to do about regestration etc? If I bought a car from a dealer in Delaware they would take care of everything, with the regestration, title, etc. What will the dealer in N.J. do and will I have any added exspenses? Thanks.

You buy the car, put on a temporary tag, drive it home.

Keep all the paperworks and drive home safe. You don't have to go to another dealership unless they tell you to. As far as registration goes, check with your local DMV.

This is a dumb question but would you have to pay sales tax on the car in NJ? Do you have to pay sales tax on a car in DE? Something to consider. When I picked up my car from VA the gave me a VA temp tag. They also took care of my MD registration. I just waited for the tags in the mail.

You'll be required to pay taxes on the car for the state in which you intend
To register the vehicle.

^^ Thats what I figured but there are no sales taxes in DE. I was wondering if NJ would try to stick it to you since thats where you are buying it.

At least you're not in Maryland. I'm .mil stationed here and if I should decide to get out, and remain here, I would then have to pay maryland sales tax on BOTH my cars, BOTH ALREADY PAID FOR, just to register.

That's right, if you own a car, move to maryland, and want to register your car, you have to pay sales tax on the original purchase price a second time (since you didn't pay your "fair share" in maryland when you bought it....before you lived here).

Only true if the title changes hands or you come from a state where you don't pay taxes on a car. Some states you pay taxes yearly forever. In md you pay one time and never again.

Did this song and dance with 4 cars back in 2006. For cars you've owned a long time (and bought new) is where they really get you. Not to mention all the inspection BS.

For vehicles less than 7 years old (Non-Residents):

Vehicle(s) titled in a state with a tax rate equal to or higher than Maryland's 6% tax rate will cost $100.
If the vehicle is registered in a state that imposes no tax, the tax will be assessed at 6% of the value of the vehicle.
Vehicles from a state with a lower tax rate than Maryland's 6% will be taxed at the rate of the difference between the two states. Example: MD 6%, VA 3%, the difference is a 3% tax rate. Minimum tax - $100. When the value of the vehicle is less than $2,000, the 6% rate will apply.

For a vehicle over 7 years old:

Tax is based on the greater of the purchase price or the minimum of $640. The MVA may require you to submit additional documentation to substantiate the purchase price.

Why is it I'm required to pay sales tax AGAIN on something I've owned for several years?

**** Maryland, I'm moving to Texas when I get out.

I bought my 350Z from a dealership in NJ and I live in Delaware. They did all the paperwork, mailed me my tags, I have to look at my paperwork, but I did not have to pay a NJ sales tax. There was a tax on it, but it was something DE added to it. They issued me my temp tags on it as well so I was able to drive it from NJ to DE get it inspected. Sent the paperwork back and my tags were in shortly later. The only issue is you have to be fast because the temp tag is only 20 days and they need processing time!

If you work with them they will work with you. I live and have the car registered in DE, bought the car in NJ and had the plates sent to my GFs house in PA
