Default 350Z vs VW GIT 1.8t 337

Ther is a guy i Wotk with that has a 2001 VW GTI 1.8t 337. Its Not to bad for a VW. He's done nothing but Mod it sence I bought my Z he is just wanting to beat the Z. Stock i think He has 180 hp BUt after all the mods he has done i think he has 215fwhp/247lbs torque!! We are going to Texasmotorplex to race on the 8th of Feb(I'll post time slips). Will/Can that VW beat the Z i dont think so, but that is alot of torque on a small car!!

The 1.8t is a real sleeper when modded right and should not be underestimated. See the thread and vids on S2ki:

http://www.s2ki.com/forums/showthrea...threadid=97713

The S2k owner in the vids runs high 13s in his car...

You may have your work cut out for you.

Oh...here is another interesting thread about a 1.8t taking down an e36m3:

Default I can vouch that..

I ran one at Houston raceway park, I was staged against a VW GTI, like the one in the picture... When the light turned green, I got the hole shot, and beat him off the line about 3 cars, then when I cross the 1/8miles, he started to pull on me.. I kept the gas pedal floored, but no matter what I do, he just gaining on me... when I crossed the 1/4mile line, he beat me by 1/2car. I think he must have some kind of turbo upgrade or something. Those turbo cars has some good high end power

Default Go Apr GTi can do 1/4 mile in 12.6 @ 116mph!

I put my money on you. But if it were a 5spd 1.8T GTi u may be toast. You are lucky he has the 6 spd gti cuz GOPR right now only makes their Stage III turbo upgrade for the 5 speed gti.

In fact, if the Z wasnt so sexy, I had my eye on a black gti JUST BECAUSE OF GOAPR! I hope they develop something for the Z, but they seem to only work on cars that come stock with turbo.

Go Apr Specs: For $3995, you too can have this.

93 octane
290 HP/296ib-ft

100 Octane
338hp/325lb-ft!!!

1/4 mile video

Actual Dynos

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Is he claiming that HP and TQ figure after dynoing the car? A GTI can be modded into a sleeper. APR has a 01 1.8T with their stage III kit plus intake, exhaust, quaife LSD, and upgraded clutch that runs a 12.61@112.14 in the 1/4. The car requires 100 octane fuel to accomplish this. I believe it dynoed at 290hp and 271 ft lbs tq at the wheels at 17.5-18psi. The stage III kit runs $3995 plus install and the cost of the other mods as well. Not cheap!

I am curious as to what mods your friend has. Because if that is a photo of his engine I don't see anything besides a K&N sticker on the stock air box, and the owner's site claims to have a dump valve as the only modification.

if you know how to launch and he has problems you might be OK. My wife , has a similar set up in her Jetta 1.8T, if you are in the powerband and roll up next to many cars, they are Toast, I have killed s2000s (of course these s2k guys aren't willing to rev to 9k and drop the clutch). My races are more from a rolling start, people take the 1.8T very lightly, look out.

My wifes jetta throws you back way faster/harder than the z, b/c the max torque is at 2000 rpms, but after that it plateaus a bit, hard to drive, you need to shift about 1000 rpms before redline for best results

The Car in the Photo is NOT my friends it is just a exsample of what tipe of car he has.
Im not sure but he was talking about downpipes somthin called a "blow off valve", External Wast gate an Alamo motorsports coustom Exsuast and som new ECU/Chip that takes him from.8 "bars" to 1.1 "Bars" and something about PSI? I know little to nothing about Tubros but i guess you guys do!

The fwhp/tq is the min hes is suppost to get (per websites he goes on) no dyno yet

So is he going to Win if so i wont bet him($100.00 a sec)

Have you drag raced at a track before? If you haven't and he has I probably wouldn't put money on it. The Z is hard to launch and you won't be getting great times your first time at the track. If you are confident you can launch the Z well, I would say go for it. I've heard the GTIs are over 3000 lbs, so they don't have much less weight than you, and you should be able to get out of the hole better. Unless he sandbagging, if you beat him out of the hole the race should be over.
On a side note, I would LOVE to put one of those 1.8ts into an A1 or A2 body. They would fly!

GTIs are NOT over 3000 lbs, NOT even close

the 1.8t engine is very hard to launch from a stop (the immediate torque along with FWD and weird powerband), but some do it well (I am still learning, I only drive my wifes car 1x/week). If I had a Z, I would bet on me winning that race over the GTI, but I am NOT sure I would put $100 on it.

there is NOT doubt the 337 is a nice car for the $$ (my little bro just got a RSX typeS, BUT i think the 337 is a better package, more for a mature buyer, it is a classy car for what it is).

The Z is in another class, the Z is compared to the BMW z3/4, Porsche boxster, Honda 2000 and audi 225hp TT.

I repect both cars, but the Z is an AWESOME deal

1.1 bar equates to 14.7 psi. The numbers he gave you are from APR's website for their 91-93 octane ecu for the 337. The figures are at the flywheel not fwhp.

Per Vw's site a base GTI 1.8t weighs in at 2932. I would say the 337 exceeds the 3000 mark because of the weight from the add-ons (spoilers and such) plus the larger rim and tires.

My g/f has raced chipped GTIs at the track (1/8 mi.) with her car...01 Eclipse GT w/CAI, downpipe, exhaust, and S-AFC...pretty much dead even. She has a VERY hard time trying to keep pace with me in the Z.

I would place that bet
