It's not uncommon for 1.8T's to run very low 14's and high 13's with full bolt on's and a good launch. (ie. chip, exhaust, downpipe, intake, etc.)

It all depends what your friend has on his mod list.
A good peloquin LSD should put the power to the ground nicely and if he's got the right combination of mods, you could get a run for your money! Let us know!

Peace everyone!

For those of you wondering the weight of a stock GTi, according edmunds - 2932 lbs.
http://www.edmunds.com/new/2003/volk...tml?id=lin0018

So over 3000 lbs. with a driver and no weight reduction (i.e. seats, spare, jack).

Guys i know that the 337 is lighter than the normal GTi... anyways i found a thread that talks about the 337 weight and a guy did weigh his car with half a gas tank and got 2850lbs... U can check it under this link.... http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=627663

Race him from a stop and try to do it right, let him play catch up. If he really has 215HP 247TQ on the wheels then a stock Z which have around 235-240rwhp and the same TQ wont have a chance from a roll due to the weight difference. Do it for fun and tell us what happens.

Did someone say that the Z is hard to launch? With all that torque and a nice linear curve? Hard to launch? Say it ain't so.

Default The ANSWER to who wins...

I had a Jetta 1.8T with APR chip, 3in Downpipe and catback, diverter valve (if he uses a Blow off valve he will have fuel problems) My Jetta made 190rwhp with those mods. Then I got the Z. The Z is faster, not by much, but its faster at ALL speeds.

I raced my friends GTI in the Z which has the same mods in my Jetta and put about 1/2 a car legth on every gear. We raced from a roll on first gear. The response of the Z is incredible eventhough my friend brake boosted. You will kill the GTI from a stand still since they have serious traction problems, from that point on the Z will pull a little more.

Your friend is NOT making 215+ fwhp unless he put in a K04 Turbo, which is a a liiiitle bigger, if he did, then it will be a drivers race.

The very HUGE advantage the Z has is its launch, go from there.

P.S. Forget about APR's stage 3, there arent many of them around, sure they make a lot of power, I myself wanteed one for my Jetta but I didnt like the idea of having a such a powerful FRONT WHEEL DRIVE torque steering ****.

Default 337, I almost had one...

I almost bought a 337. It came down to sitting at the dealer with my checkbook. At the last minute they tried RAISING the price on me by $2K, and I walked out.

After more research, I found it was not what I wanted. The 337 is just a GTI 1.8T with Recaro seats and a few other "eye candy" items, and you can only have it VW's way, no options. I decided that I wanted a VR6 with the 6Manual, which already comes at 220Hp. The option is to start with the 1.8T, and mod it until you get to 220HP....

I waited, and then I saw the Z... the rest is now 7 days of history...

Can the Z beat the 337. I would say stock 337 no problem. He might have the weight advantage at launch, but you should not have a problem, and even that is doubtfull.

Mods might be another story. Plenty of ways to hide stuff. The chip, wastegate and all that is to make the turbo produce more boost (psi). I don't remember if you mentioned an intercooler or no... humm.

Somebody mentioned slicks. Good point, with that much power on a light car he better be good at launching that thing or he might just go up in smoke, unless, as stated, he shows up with slicks.

The 337 was going to be around $23K, the GTI VR6/6M about the same. My Z was $36K. I am very happy I got the Z.

If you want to read up more, thereis LOADS of info at

The stock Z will be toast against a modded 337 1.8t. Hes putting down very high torque and horse numbers and weighs alot less than you do. I would bet every car I own that he will beat you rather handily.
