Killed a new BMW Z4
I just came back from encountering a BMW 3.0 Z4. We raced a couple of times from stoplighth to stoplight. The Z pulled away on every gear. Then we managed to go up to about 130mph, the Z4 was too far back to even measure car lenghts. We did a coupe of 1/4 mile runs on an isolated road and the outcome was the same. The Z4 is not a slow car, but I was hoping it would be a closer match.
I have an SC430 with intake and torque converter. After receiving my Z, I havent wanted to go back to the SC430 again. Really looking at both cars, I find the Z much nicer looking than my black/saddle sc430. Im very happy with the z, eventhough I have faster, modified cars in my house, the Z is a very good overall car.
P.S. Now Im getting real interested in the new Infiniti FX45, specially after reading that it beat both the BMW X5 4.6i and Mercedes AMG ML55.

I thought the Z4 would be much closer as well (and potentially faster, since C&D seemed to get some very good times from it). Do you have any idea of the Z4 was an auto or if the driver was any good?
My friend just got the FX35, and he loves it. He had gone to the dealer with the intention of getting the FX45, and he test drove that one first. Then, after he had finished the drive, someone started up the FX35 and he like the exhaust sound much better than that in the 45. He then test drove the 35 and said it felt almost as fast, and quite a bit lighter. Not sure exactly which versions he drove, but in the end he decided the 35 was more fun and that the 45 was not worth the extra dough. I think he said his car has 20" wheels, so I think he got the handling package, but I don't know too much about the FX's so I don't know for sure. Sounds to me like you can't really go wrong.
Congratulations on a good race.

the Z4 is trash. What I want to see is a turbocharged cavalier VS. the 350. That'd be cool. There is one about an hour from me. Only one of about 10 in canada. Dyno'd at 270 at the wheels. No traction though.

Mr. D` oh:
Thanks for your reply. He was a very young driver.I am 52 years old. I talked to my son and he told me that he is a very good and risky driver and that the car is automatic. It makes a difference but I believe the Z could kill easily a mechanic one.
Its helpfull to Know that the Z4 weights around 3000 lbs and has around 225 hp, I think. If that is true, the weight/hp ratio of the bmw is around 13.33 , and the Z should be around 11.32 if my calculations are right. So I guess we have a little advantage.
It must look extrange for you that I like this exciting hobbie, but we have several modified cars including a 9 sec. mustang and we won last year 2001 drag racing championship in my country. For your tranquility the race took place in a safe location. Please excuse my English.
Thanks again,
Carlos

I personally think it looks like a poor man with a 10,000 dollar loan and an economy car. You have to understand that we're wierd in Canada and sometimes this sort of thing is looked upon as innovative.

Nah... THIS is innovative.
To me both of them say "momma gave me her car last month, and I just got approved for a Visa card with a 2000 limit. Cool huh? The best part of it is that I'm only 16!!!"

It's hasn't even run on race tires yet so I wouldn't expect too much out of the Z4 this weekend. However, having driven both they should be extremely close up to about 65mph, after which the 350Z should begin edgingl out ahead, althoughmost of the rags that actually ran their own tests (as opposed to just regurgitating manufacturer info) have them pretty close on both 0 - 60 and 1/4 mile ranges. At high speeds it's no comparison just based off the Cd numbers alone; roadsters are not known for being very aerodynamic, which is only compounded by a weaker engine. The Z4 has good gearing in first, which it can carry on through 2nd, but in the higher gears the motor just doesn't have enough oomph to stay with a 350Z. The auto trans Z4 is typically about 1/2 sec slower 0-60 than the manual with a competent driver despite BMW's claims to the contrary. The Z4's strong suit is handling balance, it has very sweet chassis dynamics, the best of anything I have raced, including the mighty Z06. The 350Z I drove had an obvious feel of considerably more weight and higher CG
Otherwise I make no claims or other smack talk about the Z4 relative to the 350Z. We'll just let the results over time speak for themselves.

Mark you and Karl are going to battle it out with Jason and blow my doors off. I just found out that Friday and saturday are going to be rainy days. With my first set of hoosiers going on the car saturday (hoosiers being bad rain tires) and no Back up kumho's (not to mention i've never run the car in the rain, and My right front Koni is making lots of noise) I'm expecting a pretty good AZZ Kicking. My goal is not to be DFL. But I honestly can't wait to see the Z4 it should be intresting and lots of fun.
Will you be there friday for the pratice runs. And if so think I could take a ride?

unfortunately my rain tires and wheels will not be there until next weekend, so we may both be SOL if the thunderstorm hits during our heat. I will be there Fri, but frankly I'm going to be intensely involved in getting the car dialed in, no time for distractions
