The reason why they run 12's it's because they are on street tires. Out DR's on and you'll see 10's and 9's. Veilside supra in Japan ran 9.8 on STREET TIRES!!! Also, the popping noise you describe could be the blow off valve or external waste gate, you can't hear NOS when in use.
