350z vs. Lancer Evolution VII
I love the 350z but i think the evo could take the Z.
What do the rest of you think?
Oh ya, I also think it would walk a GT no problem!

If it weren't for looks and Mitsu build quality it'd be what I was buying. Performance wise, if looking at every category, it stomps a Z. I am buying a Z, before I get flamed ($10 says I get flamed anyways). It's true if any of the tests are true. Things like 1.0 g on the skidpad are reserved not even for supercars, but perfectly balanced and perfectly designed supercars. Well, those and the Evo as I have seen 0.98 and 1.0 g on two magazine tests, absolutely amazing. Better 0-60 time, quarter, slalom, braking, and if we saw track times I'm sure it'd at least edge out the Z if not walk away from it. Break it down to any one performance factor and it just edges out the Z, but it really does edge out in just about every category.
It's an impressive car that will surely help the industry as a whole, for us, the consumers, as competition is really going to heat up in this market segment.

Straight line is not everything as far as that Cobra comparrison goes.
I went looking at Zs today and checked out the Evo while I was there. I was surprised, the car felt much larger than I had realized. The car had a surprisingly large backseat, very surprising. The car had very subtle ground effects IMHO, very tasteful. The paint and body really impressed me, all but the SPOILER. Oh man the spoiler kills it for me. That carbon fiber stuff will cut it in the teenage crowd, but not for me personally. To big and the carbon fiber was ugly. Those Recaro seats are wonderful, highly impressive, you feel like you're glued in. Overall I was very impressed with the car except the spoiler. I'd also rather have seen the hood having color matched louvers instead of the black part for the intakes, would look nicer, less ricey.

I think in a drag an LS1 F-Body or the 03' Cobra would simply overpower the evo, not off the line, but after 60 the larger displacement would take over. I considered buying an Evo or an STI, but I just couldn't get over their looks. They don't look bad, they just look overdone. (too much stuff tacked on.) Otherwise its a cool car. As far as taking the Z, if the evo has a good driver who knows how to launch it and keep the revs up when shifting, it should be faster. Turbos are tricky to drive, if you let off when shifting, the turbo may come off boost then it will lag in the next gear. In that way the Z would beat it. I'd like to go up against one though.

The Evo would beat up on a Z stock for stock. I think the Z has the classier and sexier look, but not as aggressive look as the Evo.
The Evo is quick in the 1/4, but its the handling and braking that make it so much better.
BTW, the Evo8 has 271hp/273lbft torque, but with an ECU reflash and stock boost levels you can easily see an extra 30hp. The emissions restrictions limited the power. In Japan and Europe they run the same boost with "276 hp," but actually have about 300+

The U.S. EVO weighs Over 3000 lbs, around 3200 i think. Has around 270 hp stock......the 1/4 mile times for the version comin to our shores is gonna be around a 13.8@98-99 mph. Its all weight to power..Here we are not gettin the lighter(200 lbs) and more powerful EVO from Japan.
It will be a fast ride, and since it has a big 16G factory turbo it should be able to handle 350 hp no problem, but stock they won't be a nightmare for ne quick LS1 f body/ Corba on the roads, unless they turn the boost up, then maybe they'll hit low 13's/high 12's.

True the Evo from Japan is lighter, they also give its weight (about 200lbs less) without any fluids in it. Mitsu said they wanted the car weight "ready to go." That and the fact that the front bumper has been reinforced for crash purposes.
The Evo compared to an LS1 or Cobra is actually a good match up on most applications. The Evo will definately get the hole shot with its AWD and I am not sure if the LS1/Cobra will catch up since their power to weight isn't much higher than the Z or the Evo's. Would be close, but the driver of the Cobra is going to have to be pretty good.
I am not buying the car for 1/4s though..its for the track.

great topic. i'm really curious about those evo's too. however, if it were up to me, i would get the wrx sti. i do not know all of the specifics about its performance, but from what i did read, i was thoroughly impressed.
i'm also glad to see that imports are raising the bar on factory performance, and not just aftermarket (i was never impressed with dumping thousands of dollars into a civic, sentra, etc, to end up with a 200-250 hp car, with no warranty, etc.) no flames intended.
cars like the z, evo, and the wrx sti, will keep ford and gm on their toes, forcing them to keep raising the bars themselves. we will all benefit from competition. i think we are in for a new musclecar era, with technology as the platform, rather than raw cubic inches, as it was in the 60's and 70's.

DarkKnight. Yeah the WRX STi is also going to be a great car.
Comparatively both the Evo and the STi are about equals. Stock the STi will probably beat the Evo depending on gear ratios, weight, etc. So many things about the US STi is undisclosed. The car rocks though. I am the #1 spot at a dealer in MD for the STi and have been for about a year. I just switched and put down my $1K for ordering a specific Evo. So, I guess now I am going to be an Evo driver instead.
Like I said, bot cars are great. The Z is a great car. I probably would have gotten the Z if it had something of a back seat and or some trunk space, but its not designed that way. I also like the flickability of the two rally cars coming (Evo and STi). I've driven the Euro Sti and LOVED IT!
Great cars and I feel the bar has been raised BIG TIME. Most import cars are coming better equipped than any US or even European car. Brembos, name-brand wheels, HIDs, etc, etc.
