Default GTI 1.8T vs. 350Z

Well, first of all, I'd like to say hi. Me and my brother wanted to get a 350Z for a while now, and he finally got it. I still drive my 2002 VW GTI 1.8T. Maybe next year, I'll be in a 350 also
He has a Le Mans Sunset color, base model, 6 speed. Very nice! I drive the car all the time, and I love it!

Now, me and my bro got out, to see what the beast can do against me. Well, let me just say, that his 350Z is 100% stock. Mine isn't. I have a Garrett chip, Neuspeed turbo inlet pipe, ITG filter, and Forge Diverter Valve (bov... no hp gain). I also have a H&R suspension.

This is how we raced:

20mph roll. We wanted to do a standing still run, but my tires were pretty much gone. I have stock OEM rubber. Anyways..

We take off from the light, speed up to 20ish mph, and honk to 3. I immediately pull on him for a bout 1/2 car even with me spinning the tires all the way into 2nd. Shifted into 2nd, and he is allready pulling. 2nd gear into 3rd@62mph, He's 1.5 cars ahead of me. 3rd gear shifting into 4th@100mph, he is allready way ahead of me. About 5 cars. No competition there.

Next run. 40mph-100ish

We both put into our best gears (mine was in 2nd), we honk to 3, and off we go.

We take off at the saem time, but my car pulls harder, and jumps about 1/2 car ahead. I was acctually pulling thru 2nd gear. Shifted into 3rd, and that's when he slowly started to creep up on me. Close to the end of 3rd gear, He was maybe 1/2 car ahead of me. Not more.

Next run, 70mph to 120.

This is where my car reeally shines. I have full turbo spool up at 3000rpm, and the car has great 4th, and 5th gear gearing.

Anyways, we line up, both put in our optimum gears, and we honk to 3.

1...2...Go!!! Again, I pull on him on the jump. And this time, I acctually kept up pulling on him, all the way until 100mph VERY SLOWLY! At about 100mph, he SLOWLY started to sneak up, but I allready had 1 car on him. So, at the end of 120something MPH, he was SIDE BY SIDE! I was pretty impressed. Past that, I'm sure he would gain even more on me tho.

Later we let the cars cool down, and we kind of talked about it for a while.

My car weighs 2900lbs, it has full interior with sunroof, STOCK exhaust, stock downpipe. We are both running on 93 octane, and shifted properly just FYI. I also have a dyno/pics of my car if anyone is interested in.

The R32 is a dog, a stage 2 1.8T GTI will walk all over it.

The R32 is heavy, suffers from massive drivetrain loss, and is only making around 250hp to begin with. It is not a fast car by any means. 0-60 in mid/high 6's, 1/4 in mid/high 14's.

I've seen chipped 1.8T GTI's run the 1/4 in very low 14's.

Really...how fast? I have yet to see good numbers on the R32 yet. Seems to be a pig IMO.

my porject car before my Z was my (wifes) Jetta 1.8T, now I have similar mods to you, GIAC chip, K&N, Evo DV (similar to Forge), H&R suspension, 18" wheels and tires, painted valances (F&R) etc...

I can tell you, at first punching it, the 1.8t FEELS quicker than the Z (at first) the small turbo spools up Soooooo fast and throws you in your seat (you have to experience it to believe it). It "FEELS" quicker than my Z to about 30-40 MPH, and from a ROLL they can be deadly, I took and S2000, who (i think) underestimated what I was driving. If you race a 1.8T modded, from a roll, be careful.

The problem is that from a stop, they have so much torque, so quick that it is a bit hard to launch and you can MELT tires. Many people on VWVORTEX feel like the 1.8T cars are as fast as the WRX from a roll, but the FWD limits them (I would agree).

here is a pic

no, don't get me WRONG, STOCK they will be awesome (suspension is MUCH better than stock GTI) and come faster from the factory. The 1.8t engine is VERY tricky to work with, and the R32 eliminates that and the FWD launching problem the 1.8Ts have.

it is NOT hype, they will be cool cars.

btw, I went to go pick up pizza the other day and a guy in a NEW E500 flys by me in the 1.8T. I quickly start getting pissed and catch up. After that I was behind him at the light, it turns green and he takes off, I was right on his *** and spinng my tires while I was doing it.

Guy was a JERK OFF, now he knows from it feels like to get run by a $20k german car, He didn't expect that!!!

No need to go look at that website. I was a frequent flyer there when I was contemplating a GTI 337. Anywho, the ones I have witnessed have been at the track.

When I ran at the track with my mods, I was trapping 99mph, but due to traction problems, and mentioned bald tires, I could only get a 14.5@98.7mph. That was with a 2.40!! 60'. So, low 14's are definetly to be had next time I run on the track.

I dynoed at 186whp/243lbs-ft@wheels

the Z is definelty a fast car, when i had an Upsolute chip, 3" turboback exhaust, CAI, turbo inlet pipe, i was barely pulling on a stock Z. we were just cruising at about 30mph, and he takes off so hes about a car and a half in front of me and by 80 i was barely at his back bumper.

I had money down on an R32.....

then the rumor was that wouldn't come with DSG and wouldn't be here till next year. Buying the 350 was the best decision I could have made, VW can go to hell if they think I want to buy a performance model of a car that's changing platforms less than a year after they sell me a car....

My gf's got a 03 Jetta 1.8T and even tho its a auto shifter, every time I look at that thing, I start to get the urge to mod it like crazy.

I think i'll start with intake + chip. Figuring the intake is ~$200, whats the going price for the GIAC chip?
