Orange 350Z vs. VR-4

But we all know that a stock vr4 will not "pull a 350z by 4 car lengths", I own both a 94 3000gt n/a and a sp enthusiast 350z. The vr4 that posted the win obviously had like 90 more wheel horsepower, it had "330whp" while the Z has around 240-245 rwhp. My 3kgt is a boat, although it is just an SL, i know what a 3kgt n/a and a vr4 runs. I have driven my friend's stock 97 vr4 many times. And it feels just a little bit sluggish than the Z's acceleration. The 3kgt is a boat. It's a heavy *** car, almot 3900 lbs, give or take. And the stock 320 bhp in the car would have made the vr4 run very high 13s-very low 14s. my z just got up to 1350 miles, and i have been pushing it. It has way better top end than the awd vr4. I believe that a stock Z33 will pull a stock vr4 by 1/2 to a carlength by 70-90 mph. but i'll find that out by racing my friend. Anyway, good kill. i still love the 3kgt's bodystyle, gto power.

VR-4's run mid 13's stock at around 100-104 MPH.
The 350z does NOT have a better top end than the VR-4. Its pretty equal since they put down about the same WHP (240AWHP vs 24RWHP).
By 70-90MPH a stock 350z will still be playing catch up to a stock 2nd gen VR-4. And since the VR-4 runs faster in the 1/4th mile, I guess the 350z won't catch up by the 1/4th from a stop.
VR-4's have awsome mid-range since 315lbs of TQ is available at 2500RPM. Its not until 100+ that the VR-4 suffers.
The 3800lb VR-4 pulls its fat *** around pretty nicely.

Nice car, pearl demon. I have a 6M black Z, but the 3kgt is still my dream car (although I'm in love with my baby!) I just have one question - I heard that awd tends to mess around the tranny and comp. Is that true? I might try to get one after some relief from payments, just wanna make sure that the car is all that.

stock vr4s run mid 13s? seriously. Nah, they run 13.9s-14.0s , lowest i have seen them run is 13.8 range. Like all awd cars, they are fast off the line, but after some amount of ft. , awd cars start to lose more power than fwd or rwd cars. takes more energy to spin 4 wheels than 2 wheels. That is why they are not so great top end. Now, a mkiv tt will run mid 13s, vr4 and supra tt have around the same tq and bhp. and the supra weighs around 3450 lbs, almost 450 lbs less than the vr4, and the supra will own top end because of it's lighter weight and rwd. a vr4 w/ some basic performance mods will run mid 13s, but not stock. Pearl Demon, did you ever run your vr4 stock? if so, show me your time slips. Real ones, and not ones that you stole off the internet. Thanks.

Zulu, i'm not sure about all awd cars. But the mitsu vr4 do have trouble with their trannys. Of course, all mitsu's have crappy trannys. I've experienced one first hand, my 94 3kgt n/a. I'm happy with my new z33's tranny, i have never felt that much tq shift in my 3kgt. Nissan has one of the closet gear ratios. Good stuff.

Zulu: The cars tranny is strong. It is made by Getrag, the same German company who made the Supra Turbo tranny. The only reason you hear horror stories is because people do not know how to launch them correctly. The CLUTCH is the KEY. So in short, NO it is not true. AWD does not mess with the tranny unless you do not launch or drive properly. My car is daily driven @ 83k miles pushing ~430 flywheel HP and runs fantastic.
NosExhaustNos: Yes, they do run mid-13's stock. 1st gens (300HP) tend to run high 13's low 14's. You obviously do not know much about the 3/S. I suggest checking out 3si.org and viewing some timeslips of people who have ran their stock cars. I have not run my car stock.
Here are a few links to show mid 13 runs.

Please try reading up before you try telling me how my car will perform.

Pearl Demon, i WAS a member of 3si.org. i was like a member for 2 years. I posted a pic of my pearl white 94 3kgt. my sn was GTOpower. I stopped going there like 6 months ago. Why would i read an article about a 3kgt or vr4 when i have experienced one first hand. Both models(sl/vr4). Like i said before, i have driven a couple of vr4s, and i presently own a sl model at the moment. I know how they handle/acceleration/braking/et times. I don't know why you are so inclined to overrate the vr4. It's a nice car, but it surely dosen't run mid 13s stock. Maybe with only a cai, and d/r it can. Just because you beat a stock z33 doesn't make a stock vr4 run any lower in the quarter mile. And four car lengths? With 330 whp in a lighter car, it would have beaten the Z by at least 6 car lengths. But that's what you get for modding a heavy *** car. That's why i left my 3kgt stock. Better resale value, and trivial to pursue even a 14 sec 1/4 mile time in a fwd 3900 lbs car. And no, The 3kgt in the video is modded, you defeated the whole purpose of this "argument".

I, too, was a member of 3si.org 4 years ago. The best I ever pulled with my stock first gen. VR-4 was 13.9 and change. I do believe some guys could pull mid 13s out of a 2nd gen, but I got into the 13s after really pounding on the car. They'd have to do the same to theirs to get mid 13s, though I do think its possible.
As for the tranny, I don't think its fair to overrate the Getrag unit. They are notorious for having weak synchros. I've had friends who blew synchros while babying their cars. Consider yourself lucky if yours seems strong. The 6 speeds were a bit better than the 5 speeds, mostly because closer gear ratios are easier on synchros, but they still had their share of common problems. I heard recently that Mitsu finally fixed the transfer case problems?

if a stock 350 race a stock vr4 from 70-90.
the vr4 will be playin catchup.
vr4s dont pull hard when they hit 80ish.
like i said before, the z has a better top end than any vr4. stock for stock

infact i have a friend that has a modded vr4 1st gen.
i'll get my bro to video tape us racing from around 40-60 up to 100 or so.
i have done this b4 and i know that about 100 i should be able to beat a vr4.
my friend has a dp, intake, exhaust, and a new shifter.
and i think he also has brand new tires.
i'll prove that our Z's have better top ends than the vr4s.

Face it pearl demon, awd cars, especially heavy *** awd cars such as the vr4 has crappy top end. Let me remind you again, the Z weighs around 3190(depending on auto or manual and other features) and the vr4 weights around 3900. The 30 more bhp in the vr4 is not going to make up it's weight when racing a z33. By 80-100 mph, the z33 will be at least a half car length - one car length ahead of the vr4.
