I end up running a least one M3 a week. I always beat the M3 Cabbies (We call them M 2 1/2's) but with the coupe I win some, I lose some. One thing I've never done is drop my clutch, so my runs are always rollons.

I'm definitely going to use that one. I've run my friends M2.5 and pulled even once, and the second time he had 3 ft on me. He's got 19's now, so I'm dieing to try again with him having heavy shoes.
Cabriolets are 200 lbs. heavier, and a good .2-.3 sec. slower than the coupes. Also the 5.5 sec. time reached by C&D was on a tiptronic (auto) cabriolet. Possible the heaviest, slowest 911 out there right now. the 4.8-4.9 sec. is more legit. I am sure once the roadster version of the Z comes out you will have a lot of people coming onto the board claiming to beat the Z even though the Z roadster will probably weigh several hundreds of lbs. more than the coupe, and performance will lag behind accordingly. As for why the Boxster S has similar performance numbers compared to the Z...not sure maybe because the engine is mid mounted so the weight is on the back axle a bit more. Not sure about weight difference either.
I've run a few 996 cars and they aren't a 4.8-.9 0-60 car. Low 5s possibly.
Racing from a roll isn't really raing IMO.....the slightest head start by one car could give the illusion it is "pulling away" when in actuality they would be running dead even if they hit the throttle at the same time.
NEVER having raced from a dead stop has to be a crime....lol

They do, however, have the advantage of a severe rear weight distribution, which gives tremendous traction off the line and out of corners.

Street racing is an inexact art. Whoever jumps a light first will have the illusion of "pulling away". I don't like abusing my clutch or tires any more than I already do. Porsches aren't built for drag racing. They're sports cars, with tall gearing, built for road racing and high speed acceleration.

Using your tall gearing logic my car isn't built for drag racing either......1st gear ends at 52 mph...so what was your point
Personally a rear weight distribution is NOT ideal for cornering.....50/50 is ideal.....and that is why i believe a few years ago Porsche had a HUUUUUGE problem with oversteer on the 911 cars because the weight distribution flat out sucked.
Maybe its just me but I get a kick out of beating people with $60K cars in my 'dinosaur'.
Good day.
I have raced numerous M3's and most of the time we are dead even, with it being a driver's race (sometimes I get the better start I win, sometimes they do they get the win). That is probably the closest competitor to the 996 in terms of speed comparison. So if you think the M3 is a low 13 sec. car, then I would say the 911 is as well.
As for beating the 911 with your WS6, I guess your car is the American equavalent of the Mitsubishi EVO, or Subaru STi in that you get incredible value for the speed that you get. If speed was all I was looking for then I would have gotten the Z06 or Viper for the same price or less, but I was looking for a great handling car, with nice interior (of which I find the american cars god awful), pretty fast and a certain status too. That is why people get Mercedes E class rather than Ford Tauruses. That is why people get 350Z's instead of all running for the Sti. Not exactly sure who is calling your car a dinosaur. To each their own I suppose.

I think posche makes some great cars like the TT 996, GT2 and GT3 but my only beef with those cars are they are sooooo expensive.
Peace
