Default Throttle body research: VQ35DE vs VK56DE

I figured this would be most appreciated here since N/A is looking to maximize performance in every way possible. If this isn't the appropriate section, mods feel free to move.

I started my throttle body project this weekend and took some measurements and pictures. I hope this helps someone as it was surprising to me that our 3.5l v6 uses the same size* throttle body as the 5.6l v8

*the inlet, outlet, and throttle plate are the same size. there is however more meat on the 5.6l if someone were to bore it out. *

I haven't looked into how the signaling is different between the two, if at all... I noticed they each have 6 connections. I assume two are for the electric motor and 4 for the position sensors. While they are oriented differently they both seem to have the same functions and should output the same result except for the possibility that the sensors send different ohms out for a given position.

to adapt the VK56 throttle body to the VQ35 plenum, I was going to get an adapter machined, but easier, get a throttle body spacer and drill holes to match up to the VQ35 plenum.

This is why you cant take off more than a couple MM from the VQ35DE throttle body

Polishing:

Throttle plate polished (to 1500 grit)

Smoothed out all internal casting marks and got rid of the edge, Polished to 600grit

in the end, probably nothing even a dyno could pick up but nicely done.

Probably not, but It was done as more of a complimentary mod. It will help when I finish port matching and polishing the upper and lower intakes and the runners. And later when I get my 3" intake going.

Just an observation, it looks as though the gear ratios for plate movement may be different as well.

what part do you want me to explain?

also in regards to the gear ratios, yes they are probably different, just I noticed while the motor gear is smaller on the vk56de the middle wheel is larger. I'm not sure how much it would be off (I'm sure there is some math that can explain) and if the computer could compensate for it. I just got it cheap on ebay so I decided why not? If anything I can throw it back together and resell it for more than I paid.

Very nice! Do you know of any company that sucessfully ported the TB with no problems of the DBW (drive-by-wire)? I thought I seen Portflow had done it but not 100% sure.

Anyway, the VK56 has 315hp and 400tq, so it is pretty obvious that porting is not necessary to make power gains especially for NA VQ35de gurus...

Proflow was very conservative on their porting jobs. I currently have an old 350evo TB which from what I read, was done by Proflow. It runs well once ECU relearns. Gains? None that I noticed...

So did this end up working out in the long run? Did the connectors just plug and play?

the vk56de throttle body is still sitting on my shelf. I never pursued boring it out or converting it because I haven't felt the need yet. It was proven by sash that the TB wasn't the limiting factor on our engines, at least on mild n/a builds.

just used duplicolor and baked it...

I removed the throttlebody warmer and put in a iso thermal spacer so I don't have to worry about high temp paint.
