With the amount your currently making, your bringing home roughly $14,424 a year (after taxes). This breaks down to $1202 per month. I'm not sure how you're going to be able to afford this car making that much money without living at home (which I wouldnt want to do for very long).

1202
-400 car payment
-600 rent
-100 utilities
-50 phone
-100 cable/internet
-150 retirement
-120 food
-100 gas
-150 car insurance
-75 health insurance
-150 entertainment

By using these default expenses, you are going to be in debt $793 each month. I dont know why all of you young guys buy a car without taking into consideration all of these factors. Especially since you already are doubting yourself because you havent even made a payment yet

man, i dont know how expensive it is to live in penn. but its definately not that expensive here. I was 19 when I bought my Z, traded my truck so i only had to finance 11k. Work @ sears, here's the rundown on my situation:

monthly
- 200 Car payment
- 293.75 Rent
- 50-75 utilities
- 36.10 cable/internet
- 0 retirement (bad choice for now, but saving to go to law school)
- ~120 food (eating on-campus helps)
- 200 car insurance
- covered under health insurance from my dad's (work)

so just to stick up for the "young guys" its not impossible to own this car, and still have fun, while not going into debt.

btw dumming, nice choice on the Z, i know i love mine

he didnt mention any trade in for his purchase, so his payments will be a little higher than 200 a month. I dont know what cable/internet provider you have, but around here, standard cable runs $38 and high speed internet is another $50 a month. And then you have to figure setting another few hundred aside for misc expenses that can arise (new tires, breaks, etc). And rent for $300...if your living by yourself, that cant be that good of a place to live, and your still renting, not owning. If you plan on owning a house, your payment is going to be ALOT higher than 300. Oh well, I'm not giving you a finance lesson, I just want some people to realize what they are getting themselves into. A car should not compromise your lifestyle, it should compliment it.

i agree with everything you say, and i had already figured out that about $200 for a car payment was about all that i could handle. (i have 3 other roommates, just renting while in college). I do realize that if i had not traded in a vehicle the price would be around 5 or 600. It doesn't work for everyone, but in the same logic its not going to hurt everyone either. So while there are some people that end up not being able to afford it, there are those that can.

well thanks for the warm welcome and for your information i did do a lot of research on my purchase before i made it. i do live at home. my payments are as follows:
car-350
insurance-125
gas-150
phone-20
total-$645
all of my health insurence is covered by my parents until im 25 as well so i dont have to pay that for now
oh and not everyone has to have cable tv or internet.. my internet runs about $5 a month and runs just fine..
and even if i wanted to i wouldnt spend $150 a month on entertainment.. thats rediculous..
hmm looks like that is a bit less than your figure... yes i realize i dont want to live at home for the next 5 years, but thats why i will be putting a large portion of the leftover money each month toward the principal and should have my car paid off a couple years early at which point i can afford to get a house.. i am also planning to put part of my extra money each month into a savings account for rainy days or tires and what not. regardless of what you say or how you feel about me making this purchase i do not regret it and i am very happy with my z. sure im not gonna have a ton of money to spare for a while but not like it matters cause i have no time to spend money, i work full time-40+ hours a week and i am going to college full time as well.. so that takes up damn near all of my time... the way i see it i might as well have the car of my dreams while i can enjoy it and hopefully get it paid off fast so i can then afford to mod it in the future. yes i may be young but i did think this over and discuss it with my parents and it is what i really wanted to do. so please save your criticism.
