kind of risky for my Z, but OK so far
so i've been filling up my Z with 89 octane for 4 wks now and so far no problems. with the high price of gas these days it might be a good idea to cut costs. when i bought the car in April the salesperson said i dont have to fill it up with 92 octane. he says the 'middle' grade will do just fine. he says it'll be covered by warranty anyways if there are problems as the result of inadequate fuel. but so far no problems... i guess the dealer's right for once.
I highly doubt it'll be under warranty. Why should they cover engine problems if you are the one who put in a lower grade gas than what is required. Do the math...at a difference of 20 cents per gal if you fill up all the way its still not even $4. I hope you didn't buy a $30k car and worry about an extra $4 per fuel up.

If it's not knocking....go with it.
Of course I have heard that our cars run lean from the factory to pass emissions. Couple that with a lower grade gas and you could get predetonation.
I, personally, wouldn't chance it.....but I am not U.

+1. they should've closed the thread after this post.
i dont know why you would 'chance' this like you say, you drive a Z whats a few bucks that you could find somewhere else in your daily life, if any goes wrong who knows what it will cost you to repair it and regarding that warrenty claim ask yourself how good warrenty has treated you, there are so many hidden terms theres not point.
The reason for using 91+ octane is preventing knock / ping.
You have a sports car with HIGH COMPRESSION RATIO and ADVANCED TIMING from the factory. These conditions require higher octane so the gasoline does not detonate by itself without the spark plugs.
Running 87 octane the ECU will pull timing (making your car slower) when it detects knock. But it can only do so much before you're SOL.
It should be fine as long as you keep your engine revs below 4000rpm, above that I'd be worried. Knock at redline is going to suck *****.
P.S. 91 octane (the recommended minimum) is already low. A lot of the country gets 93 octane, which is much better for our engines. If you are lucky enough not to live in an area that only has 91 (California), for god's sake take advantage of it.

Im with the others on this topic. Your not really saving that much money by using a lower octane fuel. Its not worth the headaches in the long run when your motor starts to act up. We have 93 octane here and I use it at every fill up.

Stop being a cheap ***.. It really doesn't make a difference in the price of 89 and 92 maybe 7-8 bucks if that. It would be really funny if the dealership decided to void your warranty because of you being a cheap ***. If you can't afford the gas don't buy the car.
There have been quite a few posts on this and you really don't save any money using the cheaper grades. As Wired24/7 said your engine adjusts but it runs richer to avoid the knocks so you actually burn gas quicker and there go your savings out your nismo exhausts.
