Not Since the Opel have I.....
The Z is a very inspiring car that just begs you to push the envelop of it's performance, I need a track day....STAT!!!
The Z will be my project car as there are so many aftermarket parts and upgrades for this car. Owners of this car are a loyal almost cult-like bunch of Z-junkies! My first upgrade is to hardwire my new 80 gig iPod into the Bose system so I can enjoy the 700+ CD's in my collection on the road. Found the Adapter at Crutchfield ($139)that's made to work with the factory unit...sweet deal....I'm going hi-tech!
Driving the Z sent me back to 1973 (I was a high school senior) when I bought my first car, a 69 Opel GT. I kept that car through 1979 when I had to sell it. I was a poor college kid and couldn't keep up with the maintinance. I think of those times and hope that I'll pick up where I left off, your never too old (I'm 52) ya know?
How about this for a personalized tag: ZZPINBY

Geeese that's when I had hair (I'm follically challenged now) and I weighed 60 lb.s less!!! I'm sure I have those pics somewhere in the archive of forgotten polaroids. I'll look for it this weekend. I like going into E-Bay to look at the Opel GTs and the many sportbikes I owned. I love love trip thru memory lane from time to time!

A 1970 Opel GT was my first car and it under steered like a **** too. Thing would get roasting in the summer too. My favorite was driving in the rain, slowest wipers I've ever had, although they looked cool, if you drive thought a deep puddle, like a driveway, it would scoop up a ton of water and dump it on everything electrical leaving you instantly powerless, lucky though that nothing was power assist but the brakes. But there you were, its pouring rain and the car is stalled in the middle of the driveway (most memorable was blocking the exit of a McDonald's drive though, it was chaos).
I loved that car and it probably has a lot to do with why I like the Z too, but I have no illusions about driving one now.
If you guys want to check out so cool Opel stuff go to www.opelgtsource.com, Gil is connected with Germany to get all the hot parts.

Sports cars of those days were actuall quite "advanced" for the time. a 1900cc in-line 4 cylinder with over head cam makin 90 HP was technology! I had to rebuild the Opel when the Oil pump blew! Had to borrow $300 from my brother until I got my taxes back! Installed an 8-track tape player behind the passenger seat, under the spare...A tornado actually passed over our house when I was in the garage installing my graduation present! Funny thing was that every time I touched the brakes, the dang 8-track would slow down! I got hi-tech with the player though. I bought a toggle switch and a headphone jack, installed it next to the 8 track, and plugged up to a set of VERY large headphones! Couldn't hear a dang thing other than the music and I must've look like a clown wearing these humongous "ear-muff" head phones...I shudder & laugh when I think of it...visualizing it is scarry enough
! If you thought the Opel was a difficult car to maintain, I can remember the "horror" stories about the electricals in the Brit cars my friends owned. Sports cars of that era had short-comings but that was part of their allure that gave them character, you lived with it and you owned it with pride! Hummmm...sound familiar?
The 240Z had just made it's debute in the early 70's and those cars were revolutionary when compared to ANY sports car of the time. I hated the car because I wanted it. Seemed like every time you flipped through a car mag, someone was proclaiming it as the best of class!!!! However it was so new, that only career working people could afford them and buyers were paying top dollar for used cars! That placed me waayyyy out of the market (as did college!). A friend of mine bought the 280 Z about 3 years after high school, we thought he was crazy for paying over $7200 ( the monthly payment were bound to sink him!)!!! That same friend, prior to owning the Z, had a Volkswagon square back that twice had the left-rear tire FALL off the axle and pass him (I was with him one day when it PASSED us and ricocheted (sp?) 30 feet into air when it hit the curb!) and the passenger seat would slide suddenly forward on occasion if you forgot to lock your knee caps ( I hit my forehead several times on the windshield...kept leaving greasy marks on the winsheild)!
My the times have changed? Oh my, that was a trip down memory lane
Those were fun times, I had a good laugh, how about youse guys?
