I never drove a Z before. any tips before I drive my own next week?
(normal driving i guess, im not trying to race a car with power i never had before)

i only drove a truck with no tachometer for a couple of minutes before. i got it kinda down.. guess this thread is a fail though since you cannot drive on the interwebz. any tips would be nice though.

 

Just drive responsibly and ease into the gas until you get used to it. There's really not much to it imo. You'll be hitting speeds alot faster then you are used to. You may be at 85 MPH and not even know it so watch out for that. Just be smart.

yea. i dont want to drive so lightly that i keep stalling though.
i dont want to step on the Z since.. im young and inexperienced with a manual and with a car with 306hp.

 

Just Search around the forum and you will find tons of help..also just practice practice practice

 

1. 35 is the new 85. Watch out for this until you're use to the acceleration and deceleration points. Caught me by a bit of a surprise the first few times around. Aww memories...

Here's a tip I wish I would've had:

When trying to get into reverse with a 6-speed, you have to push down on the actual shifter then move into the normal reverse position.

reverse seems the HARDEST part of manual..


how can you move the car while barely pressing on the gas without stalling?

 

lol wish i knew that... i tired to reverse and car stalled because i had it in 6th gear!

 

Yup, I've done that one too many.

 

I did that bout 4 straight times till my boy goes.. Yo you needa push it down.. And I'm like HUH???? I'm coming from a 5-spd honda and I just shifted into reverse like a normal gear. But I finally was able to learn how to keep it pushed down and go into reverse. And I wish I knew how light the clutch was and how it released so high.. Damn lol.

 

Bit of advice #1. Practice! Practice!! Practice!!!
Bit of advice #2. Learn how to use your hand/parking brake when starting from a stop on a steep hill. Depending where in Oklahoma you are...good luck finding a hill to practice on.

Wait you mean for when releasing the clutch on a hill?? Thank god I have a huge slopping garage to get quicker on the clutch release.. Altho I know how to drive a m/t

Also, when going in reverse, there's enough torque that you probably don't even need to give it any gas. If you do it right, you can just let off the clutch slowly at the catch point and the car will go on it's own.

That is, of course, unless you're trying to do 0-60 in reverse!

 

Some 5/6 speeds have you push the shifter down and some have a plate that you grip with your two first fingers and lift up -- to get into reverse. Most newer cars have some method of reducing the possibility of accidentally shifting into reverse.

 

Yea my friends Mazdaspeed 6 you have to lift it up to go into reverse...

And its tru?? You really don't have to give it gas in reverse to get it to go?? Is that similar with first?? I'm still trying to get the hang of take offs.
