Is this normal?
Hey all, I just bought a 06 350z with a manual transmission about a month ago. There are 22,000 miles on the car. I'm enjoying the Z but I noticed when I'm in first gear and push the clutch back in quickly, the car makes a clunking noise. I notice this in other OLDER manual cars but I'm just wondering if this is normal. Thanks for any help!

But based on what you are giving us, sounds like whomever had it before you drove the **** outta it or couldn't drive stick and now the motor/tranny mounts are shot. Did you do a thorough test drive before you bought it?

Yes I did. I had my service manager whom was also a service manager at Infiniti thoroughly take a look at it.
Also my issue generally happens when the car is cold. Does this happen to anyone else?

I'm assuming this was a service manager at a dealership other then the one you bought it from right? Otherwise of corse he's gonna say the car is good to go so then can get a sale!! They are gonna look out for their own of corse. lol

No...I bought it from a private party and my service manager took a look at it for me. Btw, what whirring sound are you talking about? The sound mine makes is the revs slightly jump up and basically engaging the clutch is not smooth. The shift gates are also pretty hard to get into especially in first gear when the car is cold.

Sounds normal to me.
The Z is a sports car, not a toy. The tranny isn't built for smoothness, it's built to take hell, not to be quiet. (after you replace it 3 or 4 times, lol)
So shifting normal is gonna seem awkward, clunky, and noisey. ESP if you came from a fwd and or cable shift car. Beat it up with some spirited shifting, and she'll respond like a sports car should!
i use to wrench at elk grove nissan and that sound normal... the things that customers hear are more sensitive then the us tech ears =) haha
and yea... some if not all sales will say anything to make a sale happen. unless you know them in a personal level.
