New 350z convertible owner...nice to meet you all!
Hi,
As of today, I am the proud owner of a bone stock 2006 350Z convertible (called a "Roadster", correct?)
I believe it is a Touring edition, and it has MT and 11K original miles!
A couple of questions from a newbie here:
1) I have read a bunch of posts talking about the oil consumption issue that some of the 2006 model year, MT cars have (mine would fall into this category!)
2) Since I just bought the car, I won't know if I have one of the cars that has the oil consumption problem until I top off the oil, and drive it while checking it perodically.
3) Since it is a 2006, it is probably 6 months-1year out of warranty? Even though it only has 11K miles! I wonder if the Nissan dealer will let this slide (and go by miles, since they are so low) and sign off on the warranty oil consumption testing? Any idea? Also, would it be possible BEFORE anyone documents oil consumption testing on my car, to purchase an aftermarket drivetrain warranty that would cover a full engine replacement, in the event that there is an oil consumption issue discovered at a later date (after insurance is purchased!)
4) Would someone be so kind as to break down my VIN for me? Or is there somewhere on my350z.com that shows how to break down a VIN, so I can see what my exterior, interior colors are called, etc?
5) Someone told me that the earlier mfg'd 2006 models mainly had the oil consumption issues...I am not sure I buy that. I would think all cars that had the same engine would (possibly) have the same issues. Is there a "cut off" VIN number that separates cars that were more/less prone to oil consumption issue?
I will try to post a pic of my car as practice tomorrow.
Nice to meet all of you, and I am sure I will have a ton of questions as I get used to driving her!
thanks!

Welcome!
If your car is over the 5/50 (which it is) I doubt Nissan will replace the motor under warranty, unless you bought the car from a dealership and have a good relationship with them.
Not all 06's had the problem, so I wouldn't get overly concerned just yet. Just make a note of where your oil level mark is on the dipstick and start enjoying the car, checking the oil level periodically. In the consumption thread there is a TSB posted which shows what Nissan considers normal consumption, and what is excessive.
You can try an aftermarket warranty, but I have no knowledge on how they work or if they are worth it - but I do remember reading that some of them are worthless so do your due diligence in researching them as much as possible before coughing up the cash for one.
Good Luck!

Welcome!
Mine takes about on quart a year. Its really not that big of a deal. And no, unless you're bangin' the dealer, they're not going to let you 'slide'. lol

Congratulations! I too have a 2006 Touring Roadster. It is by far the most enjoyable car I've ever had.
My ZR thankfully doesn't have a consumption issue so like others have already said, some cars have it and others don't. Just keep track of the mark on the dipstick and do some research on the forum.
Also, get some pics up here
