So I've had this Z for less than a month, and what happens? Some dumbass backs into me..
It's gonna cost $5k to repair, but the driver's dad is going to pay all of it as long as we don't go to insurance because he doesn't want his son's credit tarnished.

Welcome -- sorry to hear about the incident.

+1 on going through insurance though, just to be on the safe side.

Glad you're okay..

But let me tell you I would've had a police report and insurance claim filed. It can go bad really fast, even if the person seems like they are going to pay.

Absolutely agreed. What if it's not fixed right and he says he is "done paying"? What if something, like the window motor, craps out in 2 months because it was damaged but not fixed? Insurance will pay for follow-on items like this, Dad likely won't.

Is the kid's dad going to give you a rental while your car is being fixed? I'd go through insurance just for that very reason.

No I didn't even ask for a rental haha. I'm trying to be a nice person through all of this, I'm not sure why.

I'm going to go see the car today, I wonder if they've started working on it? It's been about a week

So I went to the bodyshop today. They've removed the pieces and are currently painting them. The car should be ready by Friday, hopefully

Hopefully you got the cash up front and this all works out for you. The father’s assertion that he wanted to avoid an insurance claim to preserve his son’s credit rating doesn’t smell right. A legitimate insurance claim has no affect on your personal credit score.

One good thing about paying cash for the repair is that it will not show up on a Carfax report. If you trade the car in at auto dealership, the first thing they will ask is about past accident repairs. A repair of this magnitude will preclude them from reselling the car as a certified pre-owned and they will have to declare the damage repair to every buyer. They will offer much less to you for this reason. Since the accident won’t show on a Carfax report you could stretch the truth a little and just declare a slight, parking lot, door dent repair. I would do something like that, but I’m guessing you’re made of better stuff.

If I were in your shoes when negotiating with the father, I would have asked for at least a thousand dollars more for the diminished value the repaired car has suffered. This is a very real thing, and any auto appraiser can give you an exact amount given the make, model, mileage and extent of the repair. If you were to put you car up for sale, every buyer phoning will ask about prior accidents. When informed about this mishap most of them will pass on the car and you will have to drop the price to make a sale.

It’s not too late; I’m excellent at shake-downs and all types of extortion. I’ll handle this matter for you and all I ask is that some day we may be call upon to do a small favor for the family. Capiche!

Well I meant credit as a general thing, not specifically his credit score. Like his insurance rates will skyrocket and all that jazz.

I'll probably turn the Z into my beater so I'm not too worried about reselling it. And yea the whole skipping carfax thing works to my benefit

Your driver's rear wheel looks like it has some crazy toe to it. Make sure you get an alignment check (and fix) as part of this deal. Everything should be in factory specs.

Got the car back today and everything is fine. The only problem that randomly came up, besides the fact that I'll never get the seat perfect again, is that the dash doesn't light up when lights are on. I'm gonna try disconnecting then reconnecting the fuses and the battery and hopefully that works. If not then this body shop is in for a rude awakening. Let's just hope you guys were all wrong and I'm not screwed for not going through insurance

+1 on this. Especially given it's had a side squash.

That's what I was thinking. Would perhaps suggest, that said son, has done this before, ....

Hope you get this all sorted out, so it's as it was before the son backed into you.
