Default Trunk latch failure

So for the past month my trunk had been opening itself every time the car was unlocked. But if I got in the car after shutting the trunk and locked it it would stay closed. Now it won’t close at all. It’s as if the latch isn’t even trying to engage. I have no idea how to fix it without going to the stealership.

I drive a 03 350z base model.

Any help is much appreciated.

Welcome and any suggestions will depend on how much mechanical knowledge and skill you have. For example, can you pull the rear panel near the hatch lock? Have you downloaded or reviewed the FSM to look at the rear hatch area? Do you have tools to remove or examine the locking mechanism itself?

If not, you're better off taking it to the local dealership.

So I took off the plastics and opened up to the latch and actuator every time the I hit the button to activate the trunk the actuator fires but the controller arm doesn’t move so could it be a broken connnector or something like that?

If the actuator is functioning, but the latch doesn't move, it sounds like you need to examine the latching mechanism closely. Doubt it's a broken connector, as the OEM ones are pretty stout and that one is well protected in the hatch area.
