Default Question about transmission

I have an 04 auto 350z and for the past few days it has been acting weird. Sometimes it drives just fine and I have no problems. But recently when I drive it it sort of doesn’t want to go into drive and when it does and doesn’t shift any gears when driving. I changed it to manual mode to try and change the gears myself but it also did not allow me to. From when I put it into drive, it doesn’t shift any gears and when I come to a stop and try to accelerate again, it gives me some sort of lag as I press down the pedal and hear the rpm’s go up but my cars wheels start to spin and make me advance really slowly until I pick up speed. Any advice would be very helpful.

How many miles on that tired old Trans? Have you ever changed the fluid, or done any maintenance on the car?

Or even just checked the fluid level?

Any leaks under car after sitting?

It’s the original trans. It is definitely a higher mileage trans with it being 170k miles. But I’ve changed trans fluid every 40kish. I got the car with about 120k and did all maintenance when I got it. At about 160k I changed trans fluid again. So I would figure it shouldn’t be the fluid. I will check the levels tomorrow and let you know what I see. And no there isn’t any leaks at all.

If fluid levels are normal, next step is for a specialty shop (transmission) to check it out. Not a DIY unless you have a trans dyno and/or a way to pressurize and test for pressure leaks. 50%+ AT failures are due to fluid pressure (or lack thereof) issues.
