Noob question about shifting =P
Just bought my Z 2 days ago. I read the manual says for best fuel economy to shift from 1-2 at 8pmh, etc etc....
So i decided to set my shift light indicator at around 2600rpm.... does that sound about right? or should i lower it to around 2200?
Also yes noob question but..... what is ur average RPM when i drive in a town? I noticed I drive in 4th when i do around 30ish MPH....
Any info would be great.... noob here who hasnt driven a manual since I lived in Europe =P

I shift at least 3000 and many times i go up more...
but you bought the Z to be economy car or to have fun?
Enjoy it and have fun with the Z...

i shift around 4000 and i get about 18-19 mpg. sometimes i shift at 3000 as well. if you set your rev light at 2600 its gonna be steadily on when you go on the freeway. usually when you go 65+mph in sixth or fifth it will be above 2600 rpm.

no no no i didnt buy the Z as an economy car... if i wanted an economy car i would of bought a civic =P
Im just asking around cuase i dont wanna end up doing 10mpg when it should be 20ish =P
Ill stick to my 2600 then around town. I understand on the freeway once you hit a certain speed you will go above that number.
I am loving this car more and more. I keep on finding excuses to take it out for a spin =P I think i drove it for around 3 hours today... just going on every street in my town. I needed to remind myself how to drive a manual tranny (havent done it in like 3 years) but after like 10 min I got my mojo back.
Thanks Guys!

Try resetting your MPG. I know mine showed 8-12 MPG in the beginning, and once I reset it, it started showing 18-19 MPG. I think it is because it is a rolling average from the last time you reset it.
I currently average about 23.2 MPG. I generally shift at 3000, although I occasionally will go beyond that when I am entering the freeway or trying to pass people up. So my shift light is at 3000RPM because that way I can actually SEE the damn light when I am daily driving. Also, in 6th gear at 80mph, you should be around 3000RPM. It forces me to stay 80mph or under so I have less chances of getting a speeding ticket. Of course, that's not to say that I don't EVER take it above 80, but if I do, it won't be for that long since I get annoyed of the blinking light.

to set the shift light indicator to such low rpm, is a bit extreme.
When you decide to take advantage of your sports car, and do go above 3-4k rpms, then you would not get any warning anymore when you get into the rpm range that can damage the car. Especially when you do get excited and really accelerate in one gear and are a beginner, then it's easy to forget to shift. So the light is supposed to remind you in such extreme situations.
So, I would suggest you leave the shift indicator at the factory setting, or maybe set it a little lower. somewhere between 5500 and 6600...
For economy driving, you can feel anyhow when it is the earliest you can shift up. For that type of driving, you also won't be very excited, and it's easy to watch the RPM meter, if you don't feel it yet.

You don't need to set the shift light that low. WARNING!!! BEEP BEEP BEEP WARNING!! APPROACHING 2000 RPM!! lol. You should only need a warning when you *must* shift. Quit playing around, and set it to redline. If you drive like a normal person you should never see it.
Instead of worrying about shifting at the exact same place every time, I would worry more about meeting the next gear as smooth as possible regardless of where you shift.

the funny thing is that after driving for a few hours i didnt even pay attention to the light... i just listened to the engine and shifted whenever i needed to...
I am going to raise it like somone said... Like i said in the begining... Its been a while. God i love this car =)

Let your car be what it is (A pretty animalistic car)

The trick is not to floor it (really hard to do!).
If you keep your throttle no more than 20-30%, you'll get much better mileage. Anywhere near 80% and the ECU goes to open loop and just throws buckets of fuel in the engine.
