Default Lugging the engine!?

Unfortunatly I live close to Boston and hit a lot of traffic, Instead of constantly getting on and off the clutch in slow crawling traffic I leave it in first or second and just try to coast without hitting the brakes or gas. I tend to find that my car starts giving me the "put put put" sound like its going to stall and I just blip the gas a little. My question is..... is it bad to lug your motor like that. Im sure neither are good, but should I go on and off the clutch or continue to do what I am doing?

Also If I am comming to an exit ramp and slowing down around 30 miles an hour and put it in 4th I find I get that "put put" sound as well because its probably to high of a gear. Is this really bad for the car. Some people have told me that whenever you can you should be in the highest gear possible for better gas mileage, and its fine for the car...

Im sure thats all swell but by the sounds my car makes it doesnt seem to like it.

Let me know if any of you experience this and have any suggestions

Thanks

I'm sure neither are good for the car. I also deal with Boston traffic on a daily basis. I try to stay off the clutch as much as possible, but not to the extent that the car starts to stall. Are you new to driving stick? If so you should be able to develop better foot control so that you're not letting the revs drop to that point.

As for coming off an exit... You drive a Z, not a minivan. How are you not getting honked at taking them at 30 mph. Yes, you should probably not be in 4 gear if you're taking it that slowly.

I would stop listening to people so literally and just drive your car the way it feels best for you.

SO TRUE!! I hear the put put too if i put into neutral and coast to stop... can't say i've ever taken an exit ramp at 30mph (i usually accellerate for the ramps) the put put sound is just your engine detonating unused fuel to get it out. (?i think ?)

Yes this is my first stick. The only experience I have had before my Z was walking into dealerships and test driving anything I could get my hands on that came in manual.

I love to scare the bagebous out of old people just as much as the next guy but I tend to try to keep the RPMs to a dull roar because the cops in my city have not much else going on.

I find the car is a lot smoother if I exceed the rev match point with my rpms rather than lower. (Idealy I would like to get it to match exactly)

Should I give the car a little more umph when I shift rather than lug it?

Plus if im gonna screw up (spinning the wheels = smoke and uber coolness or stalling = pitiful chuckles and everyone discovering your a noob) Either way it shows I dont know what the hell im doing but I may as well make it worth watching

Then at least I can say... Yeaaaaa of course I ment to do that ......
