Default Advice on Selling my Z or bring it to Chicago!!

Hey guys...I am moving to chicago in June for residency program there. I am coming from Atlanta so wanted to ask for ure advice on what to do.

I have a 350Z TT PPW Z heavily modded by Forged Performance. Do you recommend me selling the car since it is soo cold down there? I am worried I will mess up the car bringing in the cold weather. Also.. can u tell me how the roads are around UIC area?

I would really appreciate ure help! Thanks

when i moved to minneapolis, i found that lots of people garage their z's all winter. if this is your main car, i would honestly sell it if you're not okay with letting it sit in the garage for a few months a year. i've seen the salt here is rough on the cars, so people just dont drive the nicer cars in the winter if they can help it.

that is a SICK z though. that is a crappy choice to make. I brought my g here and in my head, if i'm paying for a car, or if i've spent a lotta money on it, i would HATe to garage it that long... but i may change my mind later this year.

basically, I am probably gonna sell my g soon and get an awd car i can use year round, but also make sure i keep it in good shape in the winter (wash salt off often, etc)

but i'm new to the north, so i dunno if my advice is sound.

-.-b +1

I'd say your advice is very sound.
There are rare few who just slaps on a winter tire and drive their "Nice" cars all years round, but like I said, the kind that does this are very rare.
(Within the rare percentage of people who do this, Some subie owners tends to do it more than the RWD owners)

Usually what's done is you just pick up a cheap beater that you don't care if it rusts to hell, and drive that until all salt on the roads are washed away in around late spring.

And rust those salt shall...don't underestimate the power of those road salts. They are more potent than you think they will be.

I always say snow and ice isn't what forces me to put the Z away for the winter (very manageable with a good set of winter tires), it is the road salt they spray when snow and ice come around.

congrats on getting into the residency program. I drive my Z with the stock rims and Blizzak ws-60 snow tires during the winter. I dont know if the extra power your car makes will make too much of a difference if you stay off the throttle. And i just wash my car once a week to keep the salt off.
good luck with everything

Thank you guys for the reply. I think I am going to buy a beater car that I can drive on daily basis.

Does anyoen know how much it usually cost to garage it for the winter? I am gona be living in downtown chicago and parking is $150/mo for one spot. So, I was wondering if there are places outside of the city that are cheaper to rent?

Also..Can anyone fill me in on the road in downtown chicago..Are they bad? as far as driving the Z goes?

Thank you!

Sup man, I live in the loop area of downtown Chicago. I have my Z in my condo parking lot and then rented a parking garage for $100 a month across the street from my condo. Of course to get the $100 a month I had to look on craigslist and hunt for it, but most garage parkings in this area will average about $200, so if you buy a condo and a parking spot you would only need to rent one. Or you can opt to store it in a storage unit out in the burbs for $100 a month, but I didn't like leaving the car out in the burbs since I hardly make it out there.

I say this, but I am parting out my car soon and buying something else, but I enjoyed my Z up here, especially with this past really mild winter.

Thanks for your input...I was also wondring how the road in South Loop area...I just signed a lease for an apt which has heated garage so I think I might end up bringing my car. The only thing that is stopping me is the roads. I am not familiar with Chicago roads and was wondering are they good for a lowered car like mine (mine is not lowered extremely).

Honestly, the roads randomly suck here in cold weather. It's really hit or miss. The cold weather mixed with salt tends to make for some nasty potholes, especially in the city. I'd advised against driving a lowered car here in the winter, but there are people who do it.
