Default Excise tax price in MA? Any success stories of having it adjusted?

Hello,
Heres the deal. I purchased an 08 Base 350z in February. Its a nice compliment to my 05 STi, and its great to have RWD again.

Anyhow, my excise tax came in today. To my understanding they go by VIN #'s to figure out the value of the car, and determine what you owe your town/state for excise tax on the vehicle? Is that correct?

I paid 26,200 for the car. Thats with tax, title, and registration, and no money down. Went in ,ldrove it, loved it, bought it on a whim.
The sticker on the car was like 28,500. To my understanding thats the going price for an 08 base.

How can MA value the car at 29,999? It doesn't make any sense to me. I didn't pay that much on my 05 STi when i bought it brand new, and i paid like 32,000 for it, with a sticker of 33,500.

I'm just confused. Wondering if anyone has had any luck trying to reason with a town tax collector.

And yes, I am being cheap on this. Its strictly out of principle that the cars sticker is more than a grand lower than they value the car at.

thanks for any help/insight.
