Go to the North End (Government Center on the T) for good Italian food and expensive bars.

P.S. Good thing you are bringing a rental up, your Z would have gotten owned.

Looks like you may be getting here just in time for some good weather, all the suggestions above are good- a lot of people head into Fanueil Hall at night for the bars, for something to eat definitely go to the North End which is just a quick walk from Fanueil Hall, some places are pricey but the food is great (this is one of my favorite places there). A place to get beers/something to eat during the day might be Tia's by the Waterfront- I'm pretty sure most people go more for the atmosphere/scenery than for the food there though. The Aquarium is right around the corner from Tia's, and there is also an IMAX theatre there that I believe has the largest screen in New England from what I remember, if there's a good movie playing it would be worth seeing. If it's a nice day out the Boston Common usually has some stuff going on, it's within walking distance but probably better off taking the T (train) from Government Center to I believe Park Street which is only 1 or 2 stops away.

Can't always have nice things in Boston, too many drunk clowns after the bars get out will either smash into it while pulling out of a parking lot, break into it, or jump on your hood as you're trying to go home afterwards. Not saying this stuff happens to everyone, but it certainly happened to my last car while in Boston for the day

There are some good bars on boylston as well, little cheaper. I am a fan of whiskeys, good food and pretty lively bar. The poor house is pretty good to.
