Transponder keys in MA
I've been lurking around for quite some time and found a lot of usefull info on here. I figured I would contribute something on my first post.
I've seen several posts asking about less expensive alternative to the dealer for spare keys and key fobs. So if you live around the Northshore in MA.
Check out Locks and Keys located at the Woburn mall. Ask for Mike. I just went there yesterday and had a key made and programmed. They can do it mobile as well.
The dealer quoted me around $90 for the key and $125 for programming. Locks and Keys will do your first key for $80 and additional keys for $40. Thats the cost of the key, cutting and programming. They also have the same key fobs AS OEM, just no Nissan symbol.

That's what has me confused. Keyfobs can be re-programmed by anybody - even owners. The procedure is described in the owner manual. Keys on the other hand are "chipped" - from what I understand, they can only be reprogrammed via Consult II. All keys must be re-programmed at the same time along with the computer in the car or the car can't be started with the new key. I've never heard of anybody outside of a Nissan or Infiniti dealer doing that.

As far as programming the keys, they can do it. I just had a key made yesterday. They use a laptop with special software that pulls a code from the BCM and then they program all keys at once (new/existing keys).
