Northern NJ (Catalytic Converter)
So my 2004 350z has a test pipe and during my move from AZ to NJ I lost my stock catalytic converter. Does NJ do an emissions test? If they do does anyone know anywhere where I can buy a used cheap catalytic converter such as in a junk yard. I need to get this registration and inspection done ASAP because I got pulled over yesterday. Or maybe if anyone is local in the Bergen County NJ area and has a catalytic converter sitting in there garage, if they would possibly let me borrow it for a few days (we can def work something out where I give you a deposit or something). Or does anyone know if there is a private place that will pass me I know I have to pay.
Just because you don't have a CEL doesn't mean you aren't throwing a softcode. Go to Autozone and have them check it with a scan tool (its free).
But I would think you will fail a sniff test with the DMV diagnostic scanner. Fooling an O2 sensor is one thing, fooling a sniffer placed inside the tail pipe is another.
Things in NJ got a lot stricter emissions wise since they did away with most of the other inspection tests. Most garages wont risk losing their license if they don't know you.
My buddy got fined $10,000 for putting the sniffer into a different car than the one hooked up to the scanner - and that was his first offense. Needless to say he doesn't do that anymore.

You do not need CATS. I passed with straight pipes when I was TT'd. You're allowed 2 code to be in the UNREADY state which means you need 7/9 to be in the READY state. Private garages most likely won't check for cats but they charge. Can't have a CEL light on.
