Default Window tinting in Wa.

I'm going on Monday to get my windows tinted and I was curious if anyone has had any legal issues with getting the windows tinted, pullovers, etc... I think I'm going to get 5% in the back and small side windows and 15% up front. Anyone have feedback on this?

I'm also wondering if I should get the small windows to match the doors, or should I just get them to match the back.

Thanks.

You shouldn't have any issues as long as you keep your certificate with you in the car at all times. The certificate will be issued by the tint shop and shows the amount of tint (percentage). If any cops harrass you about it, you just show them the certificate.

I thought legal limit for front windows = 35%... he wants 15% up front.. wouldnt he get a ticket for showing the cops his cert?

I also want to get mine tinted. 25% (classy look) front windows 10%-15% small side windows and im not sure what to make the hatch window to look like... probably 5% so no one can see whats in there.

How much are you getting charge for your tint? Any hookups??

Not many reputable tint shops will tint windows past legal limits...if they would then I wouldn't use them (personal feeling)...

I also don't know the WA legal limits off the top of my head but in OR it is illegal to have any front tint I believe...

(a) The maximum level of film sunscreening material to be applied to any window, except the windshield, shall have a total reflectance of thirty-five percent or less, plus or minus three percent, and a light transmission of thirty-five percent or more, plus or minus three percent, when measured against clear glass resulting in a minimum of twenty-four percent light transmission on AS-2 glazing where the vehicle is equipped with outside rearview mirrors on both the right and left. Installation of more than a single sheet of film sunscreening material to any window is prohibited. The same maximum levels of film sunscreen material may be applied to windows to the immediate right and left of the driver on limousines and passenger buses used to transport persons for compensation and vehicles identified by the manufacturer as multi-use, multipurpose, or other similar designation. All windows to the rear of the driver on such vehicles may have film sunscreening material applied that has less than thirty-five percent light transmittance, if the light reflectance is thirty-five percent or less and the vehicle is equipped with outside rearview mirrors on both the right and left. A person or business tinting windows for profit who tints windows within restricted areas of the glazing system shall supply a sticker to be affixed to the driver's door post, in the area adjacent to the manufacturer's identification tag. Installation of this sticker certifies that the glazing application meets this chapter's standards for light transmission, reflectance, and placement requirements. Stickers must be no smaller than three-quarters of an inch by one and one-half inches, and no larger than two inches by two and one-half inches. The stickers must be of sufficient quality to endure exposure to harsh climate conditions. The business name and state tax identification number of the installer must be clearly visible on the sticker.

I had 22% on my last Z, and it looked really good. I believe I'm sitting at 30% right now and I'm pretty happy with it.

I don't recommend going 5% in the rear, and you might want to go a little lighter on the side than 15. I had a Camaro with 5% in the rear, and 15% on the sides. It looked really good, and kept the inside of the car pretty dark, but it was a ***** to see out of at night. In fact I couldn't see anything behind my car at all. Someone would come up behind me with their brights on and all I would see was a faint glow... I found myself driving slower thinking I had a cop behind me when it turned out to be a mini van or something else . And when backing up you have to be really careful and it helps to use 'the force'. I'd go with something around 25-30. It still looks really good, is dark, and you'll have fewer problems.

35% is the magic number. Some places recommend 20%.

Try calling AutoSpa (near Northgate). They can do it for very competitive price. 206-527-0587. Ask for Jeff. He did the ClearBra for me for a good price as well and I'm pretty happy with it. I cant disclose any prices of course.

What do you suggest for hatch window + reg window + mini window?

I went with the same tint all around (hatch, b-pillar mini window, side window) on both of my Z's and loved the results!

One thing to consider is that the most Z's have dark leather or cloth in the interrior and dark plastic trim which helps make things seem even darker than they actually are. Find a good shop that people have experience with in your area and see what levels they offer. I wouldn't go any darker than say 20 at the most. Anything between 20-30 should be gravy. I went with 30 on my 2006 (22 on my 2003), and it looks sick! I have picutres all over the place on my compter (both cars are black), so if you still need convincing I could email a pic or two. Anyway... just my .02. I think you'll be happy with that range.

well, I might do 15% all around, but I think that 35 is pretty easy to see through! I have some pretty flashy stereo equipment in the back, and I'm trying to save some heart-ache when I go into the city and park the car for several hours. Now I just take the sub out, but I'd love to be able to listen to a good system for the 3 hour drive.

I'm going to a shop in Olympia and they are going to do it for 180+tax. I don't think I would ask them to falsify documents. Isn't it pretty easy for a cop to test the percentage of light coming through? Seems like that's asking for more trouble than it's worth.

I use VTR which is a great shop in Everett WA I have all my windows done in 20% and love it. The police have not messed with me about it. legal is 35% on the front passanger and driver side windows as dark as you like on the rear window just as long as you have a passanger side mirror, and as dark as you like for the strip on the front window only 6" done from the roof.

That's exactly what I was thinking. He's the only place in town and he'll refuse the job if he doesn't want to do it. I could open my own tint shop and make tons just by offering better customer service. Not to mention his crazy prices.
