Default airbag shutoff switch installation in Seattle

Sorry if this is a repost --> I've seen this topic discussed before but couldn't find the local discussion of it.

I just completed the application form at http://www.safercar.gov/airbags/broc...tchRequest.PDF
to order the authorization from the NHTSA to have an airbag shutoff switch installed on the passenger side of my Z.

Has anyone recently had one installed in the Puget Sound area?

I'd like a good shop recommendation, and I'm also curious about the cost. I've heard it will be about $1,000.

The link above and a few others for the NHTSA are all you need. They have a simple form that you complete and mail to them, and then they mail you an authorization to have an air bag installed.

Oh, I've since learned that it costs about $1,000 to have installed, and that the Nissan dealers sometimes do it once you get the authorization from the NHTSA. Also, it sounds like the 2006.5 and 2007 Z's now have a passenger side airbag shutoff switch standard.

How do you know this and where is it? The '07 brochure says to never let a child under 12 sit inside without the airbag switch turned "off."

I read somewhere that the 07 Z's come with the turn-off switch standard. I'm not sure where the switch is though. I did confirm with the Nissan dealer that they will install the shut-off switch on older Z's once you have the authorization letter from the NHTSA.

Damn. I was told that the dealerships WOULD NOT install the switch. I paid $85 for instructions on how to disable them myself. I researched for about 6 months and could find nothing. My only option was to go down to Cali and pay $800 there. The instructions pretty much just told you where to find the plug and unplug it. Rip off, but my kid is able to ride in the Z now, so it was worth it. He also sells a chip that fools the car into thinking that the airbag is still connected so you don't have to see the blinking light all the time.

If you want instructions, let me know. They are in a PDF file.

Thanks, but the 2004 model doesn't even have the indicator light that says if the airbag is active or not. In the 03 and 04 Z's, the passenger side airbag is always on unless you get a switch installed.

The same with the 05's. I just got the instructions on how to disable them by unplugging the connector behind the dash. If I ever want it back on, I'll need to reconnect it and go through a reset sequence provided in the instructions.

Why not install a switch in that line, instead of unplugging it?

You can install a switch, but I couldn't find anyone to do it for me and I really didn't want to play with it to try and figure out which wires to use while my face was 6 inches from the dashboard. Unplugging it was the quickest, easiest, safest and cheapest way to do it.

Just for the info, could you email it to me too? Thanks.

Just guessing, if you cut one or both wires put in a 2 pole switch there it would be the same as pulling the plug. I think that if you looked at the wiring diagram you could find which was hot, get a lighted switch so when it was off you would have a light to remind you.

I fount the manual and the PDF, there are 4 wires from the air bag to the brains. One is going in and one out for each level of deployment. I think that you could put a switch only in the "in" line of each level.

But, you can see that the brain needs to think that it is still connected and someone mentioned a "reset" being needed when you replug it. I can see that there is a "circuit" in the airbag that lets the brain knows its there. So when Ruining emails me his info, maybe there is a reasonable solution, I think a $1K bill is a bit of over kill.
