Anyone know where to get a good R1?
Was just looking around the ads and classified and came across a few but many had been laid down or have high mileage. Wondering if anyone knew of friends or so with bikes they wish to sell. I'm looking to pick up a bike during the wet season coming up so I can prepare to ride in the coming spring and summer of next year. Not interested in an R6 or lower cc bikes cause I will more than likely end up switching up. The bike bug has gotten to me
so yea if anyone knows someone let me know. Thanks

Getting an R1 for your first bike is terrible idea. I won't even bother with the whole safety, too much power, blah blah blah you've heard before. Nothing says poser more than buying a brand new literbike for your first motorcyle. More than likely you won't improve as much as you would by starting out on a smaller used bike. If you're more interested in showing off and just straightline highway speed, then get the R1. If you actually want to improve, be a good rider, and kill the twisties, then think again. Bikes are pretty easy to buy/sell, so you buy what you need now, not what you think you'll want a year or two down the line. Besides, you're what...5'7" 140lbs? You might want to start on a bike that's a bit lighter and shorter, too.

I am thinking about picking up my first bike right before next summer. Do you think any 600 will be ok Pat? I understand the advantage of getting a smaller - say 250cc - bike first but I just feel that I will outgrow it in 1 month. I'm 5'8 & 155lbs so I'm not sure if I can handle an r1. I know when I tried to handle a gixxer it was close. Not perfect but I could balance myself on it. Didn't get to ride one yet though.

I agree, a liter bike for your first bike might be alittle too much. If you don't want a 600 go with the GSXR 750, my buddy let me ride his and it has the power that you would like. Alvin, I say a 600 you wont be disappointed.
An '05 Ninja 500 was my first bike, and it was great to learn on. Light and flickable, and still had enough power to get me in over my head in a hurry. You can get them for pennies, keep them for a year while you get a few thousand miles under your belt, and then upgrade to something bigger.
I think from those who've met me that I'm not some hot shot kid with a lead foot. I've been riding my friend's 03 R1 and after a few weeks of riding it I would like to own my own. I've taken all the courses and blah blah blah but I would rather have a R1 than an R6 or CBR600 because I didn't like how I had to change gears as often. Just my preference and also since the weather is getting crappier soon I thought it would be a better time to buy.
Alvin: IIRC the Daytona 675 & R6 are a bit taller than other ones like the GSX-R600 & CBR-600RR.
George: Obviously you're gonna do what you want, and will do whatever it takes to justify it to yourself, but you still 't given a single valid reason as to why an R1 makes any sense for you.
If you insist on a brand new bike, I'd suggest ones like the Suzuki GS500F or SV650S & Kawasaki Ninja 500R or 650R.

Notice that nobody here who's ridden for a while is thrilled about your interest in an R1. That might be something to consider.
Crashing sucks. A lot. Just check my sig.
I like the power of the bike and especially the looks. I thought about the cbr and gsx. Those two received high marks across the board in terms of overall performance but I didn't like the styling of the GSX and the honda look was nice but ultimately the R1 won me over. I was also looking at Ducati's but way too expensive for my budget. I know most people start off going 600 and then upwards but I feel that driven responsibly the R1 would be a great bike to own and I've gone over riding the R1 and R6 but felt more comfortable on the R1.
I will probably see if a slightly smaller bike might be a better fit but I still have a month or so I will have some more time to research and ride but I'm really set on the R1
i started riding dirtbikes when i was 4... i started racing when i was 6... it all ended when i was 17 and effed up my right leg to the point where i cant take 2 laps at a "race pace" on a morotcross track anymore.... my first bike when i was 18 was a 05 gsx-r 600... previous to this the only street bike i had ever ridden was my dads honda shadow 1100 and a harley fatboy... at 9 grand on the gixer when the front wheel naturally started to lift.... i realized what i was getting into... the first time wide open looking down in the top of 2nd gear doing 107mph.... i think thats more then enough for a first bike...
i have ridden an R1 and there is a such thing as stupid fast.... its beyond that for a beginner
way too much bike imo

I understand the concern and advice from you experienced riders. I still have a month or so before I decide to pull the trigger but I will compare a few more bikes in different cc classes and make a judgement gauging where I feel most comfortable. Thanks for all your advice people and I was just looking to see if anyone knew someone. thanks
Do you think that a 16yo that just got his/her license should be driving a brand new E92 M3?
Go to Alki and find the posers...there will be plenty. Just look at the wear on the front/rear tires on all the sportbikes parked out there.
