My 08 Z seems to have developed a buzzing sound that I first heard inside the car through the speakers. Thinking that it was some kind of faulty sound system thing which I might have to track down later, I paid no attention to it till yesturday when I realized that the sound was alot more amplified in the engine bay. Eventualy I tracked it down to the throtle body.

I have a CAI on and am afraid to take the car to Nissan because I suspect that the electronic throtle body was damaged by it. (maybe moisture from wet filters)

I realise that I could just replace with stock intake but before I go through the trouble I thought maybe someone could look at my problem and tell me if it is something that I could fix or that only Nissan could.

do you have an aftermarket stereo? or deck? did your car come with bose? im no nissan tech but from what you listed if the sound is coming out of the speakers it sounds like a case of bad wires/improper wiring/poor ground ect ect

 

Nissan shouldn't deny you warranty because of a CAI, if you need it I can help you put the stock one back on. If you have warranty I'd say roll over to the dealer and get it checked out

 

yes I do have an aftermarket stereo instaled but the problem just started and the noise is clearly heard from the throtle body! I dont understand why the sound from the engine would travel into the speakers unles it is grounded incorectly! I tried regrounding the receiver and amps but no change! + the buzing sound from the throtle body is real weird and unfamiliar!

even if the CAI doesn't void waranty, I'm guesing that if a part maulfunctioned as a result of the non/nissan part then it would not be covered by waranty.

your train of thought is correct. if they can blame the aftermarket part for it, you can bet they will not offer to pick up the tab. in this case, you can sort of link the issue to it. it's a gamble.

 

Ok, it sounds like I need to go to a stereo shop first and see if they can feagure out why there is engine sound traveling to the speakers and then wether or not they fix the problem I will stil need to replace my CAI with the stock one so nissan can take a look at that strange buzzing sound.

 

The buzzing noise coming through the speakers is generally caused by what is known as a ground loop. I found this thread from another forum with some fixes.

It is very strange to have the whine traced back to the throttle body. Is there an electrical ground at that point? If not, the noises could be unrelated to each other. But if there is a ground there, I'd say your systems grounds all need to be inspected. Make sure that all the new grounding points for your amps and/or head unit are touching bare metal and preferably on frame instead of sheet metal.
