I used to pay basic rate on the phone line and $19.95/month for DSL. Use it for 2 years and switch to Comcast cable since i can get max out at 1.5mb dl speed while DSL speed depend on your location from the "central office". I would recommend Comcast since

I've got SBC phone and DSL(basic). It's ok but not the best for downloading video or music. I plan to switch to Comcast Broadband for the computer after the SBC contract ends. Rates are same as Bubble's.

I have been a sonic.net customer pretty much since its inception (~1995).

I have their DSL Pro service. Its 3.0mbps down, and 512kbps up. Decently fast. Its currently going for $36.95/mo, which includes the DSL service, my shell account, 4 email boxes, a block of Static IP addresses, and 100megs of webspace.

Ok, thanks everyone for input. Dan, that's a great deal you have. I will have to look more into that.

Who ever said they were using Cable, what are you paying? Thanks!

Anna - Let me know if you go with sonic.net ... you can use me as a referral, and get me (and you I think) a free month of service

You might want to check with Earhlink, I am to far from the CO as well and after paying $125/Mo to XO for 5 years for a slow 144lbs iDSL line (it was solid though, only one outage the whole time), Earthlink was able to hook me up with 1.5mbps for $19 at first and now $29.

Another option is to go with Comcast Cable Internet and Vonage phone service (which uses the internet for phone.) Vonage is much cheaper than going with PacBell, $25 a month for unlimited calls a month to anywhere in the US, including caller id, caller waiting, voice mail, forwarding and all the other good stuff (you'll even have the ability to receive calls to your HOME # from anywhere in the world you have a computer and internet access.) There's also a $14.99 a month plan which limits you to 500 minutes a month (great if you already have a cel.)

If you sign up for comcast digital plus w/ broadband the first 3 mo. is 64.95 for both. I don't use a home phone because its not any use for me. I just use my cell. Thats the good thing about broadband you don't need a phone line.

Also check out On Demand if you get it. channel1

One thing to consider for comcast is that your based on a local download rate by hub i think they call it (basically your switch for your building or street). So if everyone is on then your download speed will be affected. However i haven't noticed it more than once. Overall I give Comcast Two thumbs up. I used SBC at my old location and it was down way more. Plus you need a stupid phone line. Ewww so 90's...haahaha
