Help a Bay Area Brother OUt........
I just bought a Sirius Sportster receiver unit and want to install it into the navi. compartment of my 04' Roadster. The problem I have is that when the receiver is in it's mounting cradle, the entire unit is about 1/2 inch too tall to fit into the compartment. Before I bought the unit, everyone on this site I spoke with said it would fit into the compartment but it would be a tight fit. 1/2 inch too tall is a little more than a tight fit. Some people even said I would have to "cut" the tabs off of the cradle to make it fit into the navi. compartment. The problem is that the cradle has NO tabs to cut off and no one can actually give me a straight answer about what they actually did to make it fit. It has been suggested to me that I look on this site as well as the Sirius Backstage site for install information. All of the installation pictures on these sites appear to be of the receiver only sitting in the compartment without the cradle being attached. This will not work because the cradle is necessary to connect the power/antenna, etc... It was also suggested that I contact Audiomobile for their expert installation knowledge. I personally called the owner and was told that they have not installed a Sirius Sportster unit in a "Z" yet and they could not help me. Has anyone on this forum ACTUALLY installed or had someone install a Sirius Sportster in their navi. compartment and would you be willing to share some hints??
Thank you in advance for your help...Waiting quietly with a Sirius Sportster paperweight.

Come on all of you Northern California 350z forum members, quit just reading this post and feel free to reply. Even if it's to tell me that the Sportster was a stupid thing to buy. It's funny at this point because everyone said to buy it and I did. What a dumbas* I was, now no one has a clue about how to put one in the Navi. compartment of a NON-NAVI 350Z. I'm not sure if anyone has ever had this problem before where everyone says to buy something and even sends pictures of the install but when you put out the money to buy it, all of those "cool dude...it will fit fine" people disappear like my tax refund. I have contacted ALL of the businesses that you have listed on this forum that install radios, etc...and not ONE SINGLE BUSINESS has ever installed a Sirius Sportster unit in a 350Z. I just bought this thing last night and am now stuck with a piece of shi* that will not fit in a 350Z non-navi compartment.
If there is someone out there on this site that can actually tell me where to go to have this paperweight installed in my Z, I will personally mail them a thank you note with $10.00 dollars in "Cold Stone Creamery" gift certificates for a little tasty ice cream desert for them and their sweety.
Let's go with the replies...........................

Well, I wish I could help you out. After reading your post, The only thing that came to mind, was I *believe* the nav spot in the 04's is slightly smaller than the nav spot in the 2003 models (without nav) ... I installed a head unit in Anna's 04, and made a mental note that the bottom "floor" of the nav box was raised up, approx .25" - .5" higher than mine in my '03.
This may be why some people are saying that "it will fit fine" ...
Sorry this is all I could offer... but I have never even SEEN a Sirius Sportster.
All I know is that it was a royal PAIN to install my Tein EDFC control unit in my nav spot.
Good Luck!
PS - If *ANYONE* in that list of business can find a way to make it work, it would be Big Al @ Audiomobile in Oakland. Though, it might take bringing the unit there, to actually show him what you're thinking about attempting.

I guess I'll have to call off the offer of gift certificates. I found a shop that knew how to install the Sportster in my Roadster. It fits fine and I recommend Sirius Radio to all............
Thanks for all of your help!!!

I'm sorry that I can't help you with the sportster model, but I can give you some information. I have the coupe 2004 with the Nav. When I purchased the Z, I had a Sportster that I moved from another vehicle and the house with antennas in each. The sportster (because of its size) would not fit or could not be installed anywhere up front in the Z. I had to install it in the consol cup holder area between the seats. This was obviously not a great location! I just purchased a Sirius X-Act and installed it to the dash between the keys and the Bose radio. Works great, has the same lighting system as the Z and looks terrific! I'd trash the sportster, give it as a gift to someone and either buy a X-Act or if your radio is Sirius capable, the Sirius tuner from the dealer and completely hide it.
