sup everyone I need your help... I am moving to Norcal soon for work and need to know if the "Richmond" area is Ghetto or not. I'm looking at a apartment over there that is by the water in a marina bay. The place is called 'The shoreline at marina bay'.I've heard that the inner city of richmond is ghetto like every other inner city but this place on paper doesnt look to bad. If anybody has info about this place or area it would be helpful.... O ya I want to be close (within 1hr drive) to san fransisco and San jose for work purposes so If there is any cities yall can recommend that would be great .... Thanks in advance

depends on what part of richmond it is....im not famililar with "shoreline"....but i think the the bad part of richmond is really bad.
why not move to san jose if your work is there? there are some good areas there i think....plus, if you are in richmond, the work commute to sf or sj will be a pain

Yeah Richmond is varried, some good some rough. But if you want to be an hour away from San Jose, then Richmond probably isn't it. You'll hit heavy traffic around Oakland on a regular. Not sure what price range you are looking for but the Peninsula might be a better fit location wise given you want to be in between SF and SJ. Perhaps cities like San Mateo, Redwood City, and Mountain View might work out better. Plus you won't have to cross any bridges to get to San Jose or San Francisco. thanks for the resposes everyone...Im looking to spend around 900-999 for a one bedroom..The thing is I cant seem to find any apts that have washer and dryer in unit or hook-ups. I hate having to go to the laundry mat..(lazy)

I work from home but my clients are in the san jose-san fransisco area so as long as I am within both I guess I'll be okay.

Unfortunatly it will probably be very hard to find rent that cheap for a one bedroom anywhere in Nor Cal... good luck though. Maybe look into duplexes, at least up here it's usually a better value than an apartment. Good luck!

Move to Fremont. No ghetto here, and pretty much in the middle of everything. Of course, this means you're always leaving Fremont to do something.

I live in Richmond, and I have lived in virtually every area of the Bay Area. In comparison to the rest of the BA, Richmond is pretty "ghetto" but the highlight is that there are some inhabitable areas in this high crime city. One thing to make sure of is to not move into the "Iron Triangle"... My next move is going to be towards the Peninsula, possibly SSF or Daly City (b/c of affordability and relative familiarity of the neighborhoods).

If you're looking at 1hr to SF and SJ, Richmond is not for you... b/c of 880S traffic to SJ. I'd venture towards somewhere in Union City or Fremont with that criteria... or the Peninsula for that matter.

Since your work region is San Jose-San Francisco, I'd recommend a place between those two citys (South Bay & the Peninsula). So from San Jose itself to Daily City is where you should look. There is 2 main roads that can bring you up & down this section which is 101 & 280. 101 is the busiest route between the two but it's the shortest route & 280 is the longest route but it's usually open roads. Watch out for the CHPs on 280 though since it gets real tempting to WOT on this route. If you go East Bay, the main routes seriously suck for commuting especially 880.

Dublin/ Try Valley area is 35miles to S.F. & 38miles to S.J. I picked it in 1982 B/C it is the center for going anywhere in a short time. Traffic --well enough said--

This is a nice area of Richmond. I have done real estate appraisals out in this area and it is very nice. Only negative is that it is build over a landfill from what I can tell.

Redwood City would be about the halfway point between SF and SJ, but it's horribly pricey there. Fremont and other east bay cities are nice and fairly affordable, but don't let the (sorta close) distance fool you. Use something like 30mph as your avg speed, then you can calculate travel time. I used to live in Fremont, and it took 45min+ to drive about 12mi to northern SJ in the morning. Also, keep in mind that you'll have to pay bridge toll to get to SF from the east bay (currently $3 but supposed to go up soon).

I lived in that part of Richmond before. Very nice area and very quiet.......only a couple of beheadings a month j/k. Also, the only grocery store in that area is a mom and pop type of store so it is not cheap. Anyways, Richmond is definitely more than an hour away from San Jose and about 30 mins to San Francisco.

OK my turn... I've lived at the shores and the cove before. The area is very nice. You could call it waterfront. The rent there is affordable because you have to pass thru the ghetto in order to get there. There are literally a set of rail road tracks that teleport you from the ghetto to the "marina". This makes the nice area quite isolated. In fact, I'd go so far to say that it'd take you at least 15 minutes to go anywhere you really want to go. i580 is close by, but you have to up or down a few exits before you actually want to get off the freeway.

I used to live in the HillTop Bayview apts. OH GOD HOW I HATED IT. Richmonds not bad as long as you are only staying there. I wouldn't call it living since I always went out of town to do anything. Shopping in Elcerrito, movies in Emmeryville or SF, dinner in berkley.

I moved to hercules (2 exits up) and actually bought a condo there. Best move I have ever made.

Before that I was in Dublin for 12 years with a commute to Redwood City. During the dot.com boom traffic was horrible but I heard its a little better.

Have you tried looking at Castro Valley? The prices are decent for the Bay Area.
