I filled up at 76 last night for 2.99/gallon for a whopping $48.00 That's the most I've ever spent for gas.

I doubt they're all the same, but since I'm not an automotive engineer nor a petroleum engineer, one could try http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html. I didn't know about this until it was mentioned in Car and Driver recently.
Take it with a grain of salt though... one of my coworkers who says his dad works/worked for an oil company says that Top Tier Gas is BS. He's basically said that a bunch of oil companies got together coming up w/criteria they their gas already happened to meet then getting a bunch of car makers to sign off on it.
Do keep in mind that Arco is part of BP (British Petroleum). I usually don't go there (w/my current cars) partly cuz I'm a little worried about their gas and cuz they don't take credit cards. My Citibank CC gives me 5% cash back on gas and at supermarkets and drug stores.

I think the most important thing is the octane rating. All the selling point of brands are the additives they put in to keep your engine cleaner (which you can always get from local auto shop and add once in a while).
Yes, all refineries have to meet the state and federal fuel standards. So I am inclined to think that all fuel comes from the same refineries, but then the companies add their additives as a means to better their market share through marketing of additives that are available to the public at just about any auto parts store.
Hey guys,
I've noticed a difference with the higher priced gas (76, Cheveron, Shell) vs. the lower priced stuff. On the dyno, we have tested things like turning on the A/C, with and without powersteering, and with different gas. So, yes, it does make a difference. BTW, a 400+WHP car with the AC on lost 15WHP on a dyno pull (yes, we have alot of lonely nights).

I've always been a big Chevron fan but then I figured out Unocal76 is almost 92 octane in California.
More importantly is do not fill up after gas has just been delivered. The gas station attendant can tell you in a snap when the last delivery was. Never fill-up when the truck is actually there!

Stock 87 octane would retard timing. 5-20HP loss. So as to prevent pinging.
Turbo-wise could be a huge spread. 87 octane 5psi vs. 93 octane 11psi. That would be a tremenedous difference.

If you ask any dyno tuner here in the bay area(Vishnu, GST, EQ)that actually tunes turbo cars to the edge of detoniation, they all agree that 76 91 octane has the highest det resistance of any other 91 octane. All of us with tuned Subys use only 76

I gas up my Kia at Rotten Robbies on Winchester near Hamilton; cheapest gas around. I refuse to go to Arco cause they (or at least used to) charge debit cards extra, and won't take credit cards. My datsun only gets premium, but since it's carbureted it doesn't care too much what brand.
