as for the latop, get a used one, wipe the HD clean or upgrade it, save yourself a good $2-400... if you want exclusivity though.... get a Voodoo or Falcon Northwest haha

First thing is to figure out whether you need a plasma or an LCD. Before we do that, forget everything you've heard about plasmas having permanent burned in images, that's old and has been fixed. If you watch a channel with a ticker or station symbol you may get a temporary image retention but it is not permanent in any way and the newer ones you have to try REALLY hard to even get that.
So I'm going to list pros/cons of both and let you pick, because only you know what you need.
Plasma pros:
Tend to be cheaper $$$ now due to more demand for LCD
Have best black levels (only very few super high-end LED LCD's can match)
No backlight bleeding
More accurate color reproduction
No off angle viewing issues
Smoother motion of fast moving pictures
Best choice for anyone looking for the best picture they can get for home theater use.
cons:
A bit more $$$ in power usage
Not as thin as some LCD's
Not good for heavy gaming use as that is the one situation where you could potentially cause image retention problems (new models in last year or two may have fixed even this though, not sure)
Potentially more reflective screen
May not do as well in bright rooms where you can't control the lighting
LCD Pros:
Thinner
less power
great for heavy gaming use
Tend to have better anti-reflective coatings
Do well in bright situations
cons:
Poor off angle viewing (viewing from the sides)
Inferior black levels except in high end models
blacks may appear slightly blueish
Color reproduction not as accurate due to off angle viewing issues
Can get motion blur on fast moving pics
Backlight bleeding noticeable in low light conditions (i.e. home theater type viewing)

Since nobody really got back to the TV question, I'll help ya get started. Warning, I'm a home theater nut. However, I also haven't looked at models in about a year, but I think I can at least get you pointed in the right direction.

My LCD in the bedroom is only 44" so I naturally don't like it as much.
So, naturally plasmas our better.

I luff my 58" plasma Don't have any burn in issues and I accidently leave it on over night with a paused screen sometimes (read- get drunk). It even has a mode where white bars go across the screen and clear up any hanging images when needed.

LOL yeah I know they've fixed a lot of the burn-in issues that used to be around, I just haven't looked much in the last couple years as to if it's improved enough to not be a problem with heavy video gaming (day in day out HUD's up on the screen type of thing). I'm still rocking a 51" Hitachi CRTRPTV (HD widescreen but uses the 3 colored crt's instead of the DLP) because pretty much only something in the Pioneer Kuro range could beat it. So I spent $500 on a calibration/cleaning for it instead of $2500 on a TV and it was like getting a new TV

My version of gaming consists of a Wii and a steering wheel so I don't know anything about the 'heavy gaming' lol
