Default duplicate key bay area

does anyone know where i can get a duplicate key in the bay area for a reasonable price? i went to the dealership and they want $150 to program the key and $30 for the key, so $180 total. i just bought the car from them and it only came with 1 key.

i dont think you can get it duplicated without going to the dealership. the key it self has a chip in it that allows the car to turn over and start, after the chip is installed they have to program it...just get the key, you dont need two keyless entrys.

Standard stuff. That programmable key is expensive. I had to bite the bullet as well. I think I paid $75 for the key and $50 to program. Some people say you can get the key on line for $30 and have it programmed. However, I tried 4-5 places around me and they said only NISSAN can program the key. NISSAN said they would only program a key you bought through them. Bogus I say.... So, your kinda stuck. I believe I had to leave the car for a couple of hours with all the keys and remotes so they could match the coding. I think what they do is set the computer and then go through a process with each item so the computer can recognized and sync up with the various items. At least that is how I understood it.

So for, $125 I have a spare now. I had to shop that at three or four of the dealers. It ranged for $125-180 to get it done.

Yes, that's a lot for a key! Oh well, at least that's all I've had to pay NISSAN since I bought the car four years ago. ;-) Knock on wood ....

ok i just called my parts guy at the dealer and explained to him what i needed. . .i was able to program the remote alarm easily with a procedure and asked him if i can do that with a key as well. He explained to me that nissan has a special computer that they hook up that erases all traces of programmed keys and then programs all the keys that you have or want to use with the car all in one shot. .so nothing gets confused. .so im sorry to say man. .were all SOL in this area and must take it to the dealer for key programming at least. .

That sucks. You should have negotiated that in with the price of the vehicle, as it should be sold WITH the vehicle. Right before you sign on the line, "oh, I only have one key, I'll need another one on your dime, please."

Yeah, the only problem with that statement is they don't give you the keys until you sign on the dotted line. When they gave me the one key which seemed odd they told me that my car only came with one key and I couldn't even get the valet key out of them. Heck I didn't really want to quibble as I got my car at $500 under invoice and they threw in spoiler, mats, door sills, splash guards, etc...... But, really, who's going to care about a $40 key. Ha, then when you get around to getting one you find out it's $75 and then another $50 to program. Whoa, I felt raped. They still tell me to this day the Z only comes with one key and no valet keys and it's a misprint in the owners manual that is taken from some other car. But, I did get a second keyless entry and that logic didn't pass the test as far as the NISSAN dealership is concerned. I hate stealerships .... So, you bite the bullet at that point and do a "lessons learned." Next time, if it has any type of chip in it I'll know. Never thought a car key would be over $40. Unfortunately, when I found this on I was on a spare key kick and had to pay another $125 for my Pathfinder as well. I figured while I was at it.... Doh !!!

I should probably call NISSAN and raise Cane for the heck of it.

The dealer is NOT the only place that can do it

Not sure about any places here, but back in Hawaii there was a guy who had the equipment to make duplicate keys (even the one with chips).

If you find a place around here that will program the eBay keys ... Please let me know. I've been trying for about 2 years now to find a local place for us in the SF Bay Area.... If the key is $25 on eBay and $25 to program that would be a deal imo.

I see a key on eBay right now for $15 but, it does say to check for programming. So, if I(we) could find a place in the Bay Area to program I'd be so happy as the dealership will not program them for me unless I buy the key from them.

if you are anywhere near the great mall in san jose/milpitas there is a guy that works at the carts and he claims to be able to do it. i asked him about it and he says he charges like 80 bucks, and he has to go to your car. the only drawback is that you get a knockoff key without the nissan emblem (which isnt bad if its your back up). i didnt do it so i am not absolutely positive tho

the guy that works at the carts. . .. that doesn't seem a tad shady to u?. .like he can probably mold your key as well and rob your z after a few weeks while your sound asleep. ..

Default Key issues...

Yup! I bit the bullet and bought me a generic key then had it cut by a local locksmith - no programming.
Went home and tried it.
It opens the door then tried to start the Z - but it only cranks the engine and won't start the car. So I inserted my orig. key and it starts the car right away, then I inserted the copy and again it only cranks the engine but not start the car.
I figured for $2.50 it's worth a try.
I purchased a key FOB remote a while back on eBay for my Murano, then sold it, then used that same FOB and re-programmed the same remote for my Z - and it works.
I guess any key FOB remote will work on the Z after programming - but not the keys.
So question is: Can I buy a Z-key with transponder on eBay then have Dealer program it? Or will Dealer only program keys bought from them?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2003-...em310024393103

This key costs only +/- $20 - way cheaper than Dealer - but useless if Dealer will not even program it.

So maybe I will try that key-guy on a cart at the Great Mall in Milpitas San Jo if he can do it. But does this guy have a computer like the Dealer to program it?
Will he return/refund money if it does not work?
