Default Broken exhaust, any maybe more due to SF streets.

So after having lunch with my Mom today, I was on my way home. Trying to get on the Bay Bridge from Oak St. in SF. It was between Steiner and Fillmore on Oak where it happened.

Long story short, whoever was working on the road decided to put the metal plates at an angle on the street. My car is not super low, but is lowered with coilovers. Anyway, below is the road pic and my broken exhaust pic...pretty bad as you can see the metal place ripped a big hole on my mid pipe. I was driving at around 35 mph, then heard a big pop, then my car started to stutter and making weird thump noise.

Of course, I called the number on the Construction sign and it was a wrong number.

I called my insurance and the adjuster will call me tomorrow. I hope it's not considered collision because my deductible is $500 for that, but much cheaper if it's considered comprehensive.

The car starts, but when I drive forward, it's making some really weird noise like thump...thump...thump...like the car is broken and the car stutters when moving forward. When moving in reverse, no thump...thump sound. So I am really worried that the impact did more damage than just the exhaust.

Anyone know a shop near that area? There used to be some shops on Fell or McAllister around that area. I think I can drive really slow and make it to a local shop. I know I can't drive on the freeway and really don't want it to be towed.

Thanks in advance for any advice on shop or the situation.

Did you check for any other damage besides your can? For the most part, all your car would do with a broken can is be real loud. There shouldn't be any other problems usually.

I didn't really check as I was too pissed at that time...now come to think of it, could the engine mount be messed up? I mean, the impact was really hard and the exhaust is ultimately attached to the header...so I don't know...yeah, with a bad exhaust, all I would expect would be a loud *** ride...so it might be worst than that.

Side note: After the hit, I parked the car and then went back to the spot to take pictures. Seems like some one after me also got hit by that damn spot, because I see a streak of oil on that lane...

there's a place called golden muffler around there that you can get to. if i remember correctly, it's on 6th street and Howard(or whatever that street is after mission). they can get your car onto a lift and see if there are more damages. good luck

Is that the stock mid pipe? If so I have a complete exhaust from my 08 that is just taking up space here. Maybe we can work something out instead of paying a $500 deductible. Exhaust was on the car for a little under 1K miles. Im not looking to take advantage of your situation but more like help you out bro. Let me know if you need it and Im sure we can work something out.

Also, no need to go through the construction number. If this was on a city street the city is responsible. I had a damaged rime on a city street back in L.A. and the city bought me a new set.

Sorry about your car hope its just the exhaust and nothing else.

I'm sure that impact through your entire exhaust system out of wak. That sign probably did some damage to the headers, since that is where it's ultimatly attached to. probably pulled 'em off a little and stripped some bolts. The thump thump might be an exhaust leak up by the headers against the block.

It's not the stock mid pipe. It's a Greddy Ti-C single. I still have my stock exhaust so I could go back to stock if necessary, thanks though.

Anyone has experience with the auto shop on Fell and Franklin? I think it's right next to the California Auto Detail place.

TIA

Man that sucks!

It could be more serious then it looks and sounds, I'd have Z Car Garage take a look at it.

I know doing so may be extra effort, but do you really want to take to some ordinary shop?

I don't really have a choice, towing it to SJ will not make economical sense. I finally took it to Franklin Auto Body...which is just a few blocks away...the folks there seems very nice and helpful...now I have to wait for the insurance adjuster to take a look at it on Wednesday...freaking slackers. I called on Sunday and it will take them 3 days to get an adjuster to the shop to look at the damage.

A few more pics of the freaking road for your interest.

dont get your insurance involved. i was on 80 heading towards sacramento and a few miles before the vallejo bridge, i hit a pothole. bent my wheel and of course gave me a flat. i initially coughed up the money to pay for the wheel fix and tire. i saved all of my receipts. i filed a claim with caltrans (google it). they reimbursed me later even though it took a while.

I called insurance thinking the damage might be more than just the exhaust. If I were sure that was the only damage, then I wouldn't have gotten insurance involved. Oh well, let's see how that plays out. Hope my premium won't go up because of this.

Hi Realrammstein, nice to meet you the other day. This must be bad luck month for the Black Zs.

That's what I will have to do...insurance is not gonna pay for it because they say I have after market stuff, which is not covered. Sucks. Now I will just pray that the exhaust is the only damage. I need my econ stimil check now....
