I have a thing for the SPS-48E three-dimensional air search radar.

One night I was in Alameda with one and the guys working on it were just begging to light that thing up for testing. I told them to sector out the 180 degrees of sweep facing Alameda/Oakland and just transmit towards San Francisco and then to park the thing exactly where they started it from.

They fired the thing up, did a 360 degree sweep at the 7.5 rpm mode and parked it like nothing happened. The next morning I had to face an investigation spawned from about 100 civilians complaining from across the bay. Everything from knocking out television to opening garage doors. Seems that the ten mile of bay wasn't far enough for the radar with its 200 mile range. I just denied everything.

If you really want the best have a look at the SPY-1B by Lockheed Martin - they're top of the line Aegis combat system sensors.

Sorry you probably wanted radar detectors right?

c) none of the above.

Any radar is going to generate too many false alarms around here for my tastes. CHP doesn't pester me going 75-80 on the highway. How much faster do you want to drive?

i don't think driving locally helps much besides the occasionally CHP on 280/101. I have the beltronics RX65 pro. It works good for long distance driving, but around the bay... not so useful. The cops either trail you to find your speed, hide in corners waiting for u to do rolling stops and pull u over for other random stuff. Only useful for CHPs that leave their KA radars on.

9500ix Escort, kills off the false alarms, you update weekly for photo radar, red eye etc.// The next best is the 8500x50 Escort. Also had the experience with the V!, which I would put at 3rd best. But it's everybody's own opnion. And no, I'm not satisfied at 75-80. I've done the triple digits mutltiple times. Again that's up the the person what they drive. After all it's their vehicle, just be safe and not around other vehicles is a good rule.

I have the Escort x50. Turn off the X band alarms and there actually isn't that many false alarms. I dont really speed much anyways but the tickets here are like $300+, right? And $250+ for a measly red light violation? That was more than enough reason for me to pickup a detector.

dang, one ticket alone pays for a detector. Were the fines in california always this high or just recently due to the economic down turns?

that sucks bro did you sir him or did you dude him up like were you hella nice or was the cop just out to get you no matter what you said I have gotten away with so much its crazy but my ticket is well deserved I was going 78 in a 55 double fine zone and cop let me off with no double fine and a ticket saying I was going 65 so instead of my ticket being 700-800 it was only 300 so its how you talk to the cop but some cops just dont care I had a cop lecture me for driving fast on 580 and I calmly explained to him that I was late to work and I was an asst. store manager of Zumiez my luck his son loves Zumiez so he let me go and that has happened plenty of times I just learned to leave on time and drive the speed limit no matter what there will always be a cop waiting to write you a ticket around the corner so I am always cruising at or no more than 5 mph over the speed limit so now I know dont be a lead foot unless you got a kick-@ss radar detector where it pinpoints the radar and how far it is then go as fast as you can lol

I was calm, apologized, polite, and even told him i work at the DOJ... but he didn't care.. i guess three violations was more then enough.. it was a motorcycle cop.. i do have to say that now i watch my speed and try to keep it around 70 on the highway

I usually dont drive faster than 80 but every so often i like to go in the triple digits.

I bought a used 9500ix for $340 shipped off ebay, works perfectly fine, havent had any actually "saves" but seen it work fairly well

Im wating for a hardwire kit to come in a few days

I still need to get a radar detector, but if you do get a ticket fight it. Fight EVERY ticket regardless of the seemingly hopeless circumstances. I've got pulled over countless times in the last couple years and 3 tickets in the last 2 years (1 was a 2 point excessive speed violation), and have a clean record still. If you get a ticket do this:

1. Wait for arraignment ... takes ~2-3 months
2. Ask judge for trial by written declaration instead of setting a court date (he has to agree) ... gives you 30 days to submit
3. Wait for trial by written declaration results ... takes ~2-3 months
4. If found guilty, submit a trial de novo ... takes another ~2-6 months
5. If cop doesn't show, you win. If he does, have your arguement well planned.

You still have to pay the bail, but this will extend your final court date by over a year from the ticket date. The officer will probably mess up somewhere along this process, or forget the incident alltogether by the time the court date arrives. I've beat 2 serious tickets this way.
