I'm hoping all of our Z brothers and sisters (and everyone else for that matter) up in the North Bay, Wine Country, Santa Rosa, and above are faring OK!!!!
If there's anything I can do from here in South Bay, don't hesitate to let me know. I can run up supplies, water, food, whatever...
Very sorry to hear of the Sonoma fires, yet being in Colorado there's not much help I can provide. Glad to hear that the fires haven't directly impacted Sonoma Raceway.

Well, Sears Pt/Sonoma Raceway is at the furthest Southern end of the Napa Valley, right near San Pablo Bay (inner extension of SF Bay) and fortunately, there's only grasses leading up to the track boundaries.
Never the less, fire is right alongside...
It's nutz here..... first floods earlier this year; then record 115 deg heat a month ago, big a$$ fires now and this afternoon, I watched my BBQ shake due to a 4.something earthquake. We're going to be an island soon... conveniently breaking away right at the borders. And with the secession movement, an island NATION. Laff.....

i just read about that, looks like it was right on you
Few miles due East. I thought my BBQ was shaking cuz of an early glass of sumpin' made from grapes. Didn't think much of it at the time until my wife told me we had a little quake. 2+2=5... "Ohhhhhhhhhhh, that's what that was, eh? OK, let's eat." Gotta be over 5.0 to really get my attention.

Not that I'm wishing....
thats what my last gf told me.... prob why she is an ex
oh, you meant richter scale
last year there was a good one in OK that i felt move my bed, was weird and the first time i experienced it
Insane to think it's 2017 and there isn't a fire suppression system setup for those flah fire areas....
at least for the neighborhoods
Yep, that's true but a couple of things hinder that.... like who's going to pay for it? Lots of infrastructure to R&R, a pretty sizeable project that public funds aren't available for. I mean, really, we can't even get the potholes on the interstates fixed without additional taxation on gasoline. (And in case anyone frowns on that, it is clearly a case of "taxation - for roads - paid by those who use them." Seems fair to me.)
But it's not all bad.... there were some serious lessons learned after the Oakland Hills fire of '91. Fire preparedness in those areas is acute. You light a match up there and there's 3 engine companies all over you.
The other thing to consider, CA has been in a drought crisis until this year and combine that with ongoing North vs South water wars over Riperian rights, no one (politically) is going to publicly go out on a limb to try and build any infrastructure that gives more water to a select few areas. The pollies want to keep their jobs.
In any event, not really sure any form of fire suppression could have staved off the firestorm driven and spread by 50-60mph gusts of wind.
Weather people were right. Winds have shifted to Northerly.... blowing a lot of the smoke from Napa/Santa Rosa fires all the way down here to San Jose.
Normally, these skies would be blue.... there are no clouds.
Feels like there's a fire in the Santa Cruz mountains a couple miles away rather than 88 miles away...
I'm in Vallejo about 7 miles away from one of the big fires in Napa(Atlas). Hoping the wind doesn’t change to our direction overnight…there is a small chance that the fire could actually reach where we live in the next 24 hours but it's probably unlikely. Air quality and smoke has been the big problem since Monday...got really bad today. (I work in SF and on Monday there was a ton of smoke there already too) Worked from home today and tried not to go outdoors. My son's school actually ended early today and they are closing all schools tomorrow and Friday because of how bad the smoke and ash is. I'm hearing schools in the East Bay are doing the same. It's absolutely nuts how big these fires are and how not contained they are...so much dryness up in the Napa/Sonoma area and miles or hills with dried grass and trees....it's just immense. Feel so bad for all those that have lost their homes and barely made it out with their lives on Sunday night. Lives have been lost and they will probably find many more in the coming days because so many of the folks that live in these areas are older and not able to move quickly to evacuate. I think that there will be less of that now that they are predicting where the fires are going to go next and can give much more time in terms of warnings. But yeah...it's a bad situation right now. A firefighter friend of mine said they don't expect to even be close to having things under control until 10/20 at the earliest so expect the smoke to continue...likely thru the end of October...crazy.

WOW, just WOW. Having never seen anything like this it's hard to fathom the size and implications. - Good luck
They are still investigating it but say the main fire was likely started by high winds(we had 60-70 MPH winds kick up late Sunday night...they call them Diablo Winds) knocking over power lines that then sparked...happened way up away from where people live apparently. The wind was so strong that it just grew and started other fires really quickly. I usually lean toward thinking man made or arson but this all happened late at night so likely it was just the perfect storm once the main fire started from those power lines.
The winds were supposed to pick up last night but still haven't...news is saying this morning it will happen but it would be awesome if they were just wrong and it stayed calm. Guess we'll see what happens today.

Still a lot of speculation. The big one is pointing at PG&E for trees not cut back far enough from power lines as KingBaby said. Not sure how true that is and I don't even want to think about it. The drama is still unfolding and with over 3,500 structures already taken and more imminent evacs going on, it's just a wait and see at this point.
I watched the Oakland hills burn in '91 and thought that was a major calamity (and it was) but once this one surpassed the carnage numbers from then, it really hit me how bad this is.
Hats off to Cal Fire and all the people fighting this and supporting those affected.
Thanks Mic....this day is dawning much better than I thought it would. I was around when the Oakland hills burned too and I agree...was a major calamity then...but this...this is just hard to wrap your head around...the enormity of it all. What we really need is a good rain storm...that would help immensely to get a handle on it all. Weather forecasts say next Thursday there's a chance...hoping that chance turns into a 2-3 day downpour...fingers crossed. Also agree...the U.S. is getting it's *** kicked this year from all directions it feels like.
