stationed in hawaii
Long story short, i am in the navy and am moving to hawaii. I was wondering if i have to change my registration to hawaii, or if i can keep South Carolina Plates. Also, my windows are 20% tint, anyone have a way around passing inspection
Hawaii has a racket going on with regestration. for military its arround $15 a year for regestration, if you wanna keep your previous plates its about $35 for every 6 months. The tint nope the most you can get away with is 29. If you get your safety done with out changing it they will charge you check it fail you, you have to remove it then pay for another check.
If you have any Mods you got to get a recon inspection done. I got the rules on those so PM me if you want them. The same goes for the mods. They charge, check, fail, then repeat. Now you have to get an apointment for a recon check.
EDIT: Just saw your sig. Looks like your mods are ok, they might get pissy about the wheels, but its a 2+2 rule. For cars they can be up to 2 inches over and 2 inches wider without recon. With the springs you may be able to get awway with if they didn't settle deep. You would have to get an alignment done with in 90 days of your apointment and bring that with you. They'll look at it and bless it. You'll get another sticker on the car and you fall under recon then. (recon= reconstructed vehicle)

As for recon, if the diameter of the rim is 1.5 inches bigger, then you need recon. Also botom of liscense plate can't be lower than 12", and center of head light has to be at least 21"(might be 22", can't remember exact number).

I've heard stories left and right about this allover the island.

based on your mods I'd say you could get away w/o recon if you wanted to by just staying away from waikiki (rookie cop haven) and not drawing attention to yourself. I'd say most cops here aren't that interested in giving recon tickets out unless you make it really obvious (i.e. dropped to the ground, blasting your music, etc) like some of the ricers. but then again there are some cops who are d1cks or just want to make their ticket quota. the things you could get ticketed for based on your sig are: tint, drop and your DVD screen...which are actually the same things I could get ticketed for, but never have (so far).
I took my eclipse to get safety earlier this year and failed because one of the reverse lights went out. Took it back two days later and they didn't charge me again.
My sister also went for safety on her Grand Vitara and failed for bald tires, took it back a week later and didn't have to pay again.
This was at two different stations, so I really don't know what to say.

What's up guys. I'm in the military too (Air Force) and my wife and I are moving to Oahu in Jan. We're currently in FL, what is the proceedure, if there is one, on being able to keep out of state tags and avoid all this recon, safety inspection etc hassle. It sounds horrible. thanks.
PS--My wife's Z only has aftermarket wheels, 18x91/2 rears, 18x81/2 fronts (enthusiast model) and FL tint,
My info's in my sig plus the Fl tint.

Just came from florida. Some of my friends worked in your squadron. Even if you have out of state tags you still are subject to some thing. It's not a get out a jail free card. Florida tint, when I was there I had 15 front 10 rear and never got hasseled. Here you cant go darker than 29 (legal is 35 they let it slide at 29).
Spoke with your wife when she was on here before helping narrow down locations to look at living.

Jeesh, Hawaii...I retired out of Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. Then worked for the Hickam Exhange for a while as an accountant, till I went came here to Calif. Will be going to Florida "Fort Walton Beah" near Eglin AFB, when I leave here, that is retire again. So you all are talking of either my old stumpin' grounds, or my future ones. Used to eat at Schofield at the Club, always had good dinners there. Nowe 2003Z, when you mention getting old, I'm with you all the way....oh, outch, shoot, get the ambulance...but hey sports cars keep a person young. (260Z, 280Z, 911 Porche, 350Z). Yep, I'm still young..... :-) You all just gave me a little homesickness there.

Yeah man, thanks again for all the help with the vehicle info and the housing info too. Looks like I'll be scraping off the FL tint before we go. I'll probably have the shop here put HI legal tint on the cars before we leave since he's really good and cuts us a nice discount. I think I'd rather pay extra and keep the FL tags though, even if it's not a complete "get outta jail free card".
Don't scape the tint! My tints on my beemer was 18% and the after market muffler I had installed was loud as hell. Took it to this place my supervisor told me about. Let's just say that inspection tag is good till next year. Guy who owns the repair shop is cool with military... PM for info.

I kinda figured there'd have to be at least a few "cool" shops/garages around that were more laid back. I'm still on the fence about keeping the tint or not. I really don't want to get hasseled by the Fuzz over there. The wife and I get that enough over here.
