Since you're going to Big Island I can't help you out (I'm on Oahu). Only thing I can help with is to tell you to go the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Here's some more info... eat as many plate lunches as possible. L+L is real popular. Chicken Katsu is the best. Also, try hamburger steak and loco moco. Make sure you go to Zippy's. If you can find some, eat Spam Katsu. Also, try some meat chun. Hot malasadas are good. Go surfing or body boarding (I'm into body boarding myself). Get yourself some shave ice.
This is all general stuff you can do on most (if not all) the islands. But it's all must-do stuff.
booger,
You didn't say where you're staying, so I'm not sure exactly what to tell you. If you're trying to watch your cash, you may want to make a beeline to Costco(the warehouse store) to stock up on food and adult beverages. Drinks on the Big Island are expensive. If money is no object, the helicopter tour of the island is pretty cool. A driving trip to/from the volcanic park will potentially burn a whole day, so you have to decide how you want to spend your time. Driving North to the Parker Ranch and the other side of the island is like a complete climate change. It reminded me of a rusty little port where you'd find McHales PT boat moored. One of the hotels (I think it was the Mauna Lani) had a Friday night seafood buffet that was one of the finest buffet experiences ever. Check out the Hilton Waikaloa to swim with the dolphins etc. You can rent Harleys or bicycles, depending on your tastes.
It was a Mustang convertible for me.... Have a great time!

All I know is expect to see alot of rock on the Big Island... lava rock that is. Island hopping is cheap... about $70. See Maui and Kauai before you folks leave. They're alot more green. Oahu on the other hand, you're not missing much if you're done with getting wasted.
