Default need advice on sigma 17-70mm lens

hello, i just recently sold my nikon d50 so i could purchase a canon rebel xt (hope i'm making a good upgrade)

i thought about getting the Rebel XT + 18-55 lens kit that would come out to be $610 shipped from amazon.com

however, i heard that the lens they give u isn't all that great..

so i was wondering if u think this setup would be good..

buy the Canon Rebel XT body only for $506
buy Sigma AF Super Wide Angle 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC macro for $339
total would be $845

what do u think of the lens? it's wide angle, it has macro.. f/2.8

question, using it to start into photography?
I have the Canon EOS 10d with Sigma 28-200 lens plus a 19-35 wide angle. For me and my buget, and the fact im starting out in photography it seamed a good deal. Yeah the lens they give on the kit isnt that great, i had one of those lens.
I went with the 28-200 because of it range, wide to telephoto zoom with out changing lens.

It depends on what you want to shoot.

Check out KEH.com and look at some of the used autofocus prime lenses. A good start is the 50mm 1.8f. Its dirt cheap. I don't know what the magnifcation factor is on the Canon but if it close to the D50 expect it the be a 70mm equivlent. It would be great for portraits

If you can afford it, a zoom that maintains a 2.8 f-stop over its whole range are great.

I used Canon gear for a long time but recently switched to Nikon. Canon does offer better AF in low light which can be nice.
